Mix dates, water, soda - set aside.
Cream sugar, shortening and egg-add vanilla.
Combine flour and baking powder - add to date mixture and add nuts.
Bake in greased 10 by 6 1/2 inch pan.
Bake 350 degrees for 30 min. or (35 to 40 minutes).
Mix first 3 ingredients - add boiling water and cook until thick.
Add butter and vanilla.
Serve with warm sauce.
Top with cool whip
I play bridge and sometime during the evening we always have a nice dessert break. This recipe was given to me by Wilma Grandy. Even if you are on a "watch your weight kick" - you have to yes to a small pieace of Wilma's Date Nut Pudding - and you just sit there hoping she forgets and brings a big one. Oh!!! she is an excellent bridge player too.
Tip: To remove crayon marks from linoleum or tile, use silver polish.
