Safeguarding your children on the Internet

A lot of parents are concerned about safeguarding their children from accessing porno sites.
The most powerful tool you can use is Education.
Here are a few links to some sites that contain specific software and information pertaining to this concern:

| Surfwatch | Cybersit | Cyber Patrol | Net Nanny |

"Children will be exposed to sex and violence, whether in the real world or the cyber world. They need to be taught how to handle it. Besides, the perils of online sexual explicitness may be far less damaging than many of the atrocities children must deal with on a daily basis: gang violence, crime, guns, drugs, abuse. The Internet provides an open forum for discussing many things, including sexuality, one of the most important areas of human activity. The anonymous nature of the Internet allows for frank and open dialogue about important sexual issues, such as teen pregnancy, rape, and AIDS prevention. Parents should join with their children and discover the unfettered environment of cyberspace where free speech reigns."

"Protecting children from adult information on the Internet requires parents to monitor their activities and online destinations, just as responsible parents do not let their children wander the streets unattended. And, just as in the real world, it is up to parents to teach their children how to enjoy the positive influences and avoid the negative ones. The paramount responsibility of deciding what material a child is ready to experience, lies in the hands of a legal guardian; in other words, a child's censor should be his parent, not his government."

Internet versus Children and television

  • American children and adolescents spend 22-28 hours per week viewing television more than any other activity except sleeping.
  • American television and movies are the most violent in the world.
  • The American Psychological Association estimates that the average American child or teenager views 10,000 murders, rapes and aggravated assaults per year on television.
  • Sixty-three percent of the Hollywood elite say the industry glorifies violence, and 72% say the amount has increased in the past decade.
  • Nearly 4 out of 5 Americans believe violence on television entertainment programs directly contributes to the amount of violence in society.
  • Over 1,000 studies and reviews attest to the fact that exposure to heavy doses of television violence increases the likelihood of aggressive behavior, particularly in males.
