Winnipeg is a paradise for spectators and sports fans as well as participants.

One-third of Winnipeg's population participates in amateur sports. Roller and disc sports are the fastest growing sports in Winnipeg.

Golf is in full swing in Winnipeg, with 23 courses within city limits, five of which are city operated. Another 21 courses are within a 45 minute drive of the city.

Tennis is also a major sport in Winnipeg, with hundreds of free courts available at community clubs or in the city's 850+ parks.

Winnipeggers are active in more than 80 organized sports, many now headquartered in the administrative offices of the Manitoba Sports Federation. Private clubs and community centres also provide specialized training facilities and support. Running benefits from designated footpaths and river-side streets blocked to vehicular traffic on summer Sundays, and is highlighted by the annual Manitoba Marathon, which draws athletes from around the world.

Local sports heroes have been inducted to Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, in its new site in the downtown store of The Bay, on Portage Avenue.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League have been entertaining their fans since 1879. The Bombers have appeared in 24 Grey Cup Games, winning 11 of the games. Their first win, in fact the first time a team from western Canada won the Grey Cup, was in their second appearance in 1935. The Bombers won 4 Grey Cups in 5 appearances from 1957 - 1962, missing only the 1960 game.

A long drought set in from their 1965 loss until the team competed in the 1984 game, which they won. Then the team made appearances in 4 games from 1988 - 1993, splitting with two wins and two losses.

The home fans were disappointed in 1991 when their team failed to play in the first ever Grey Cup held in Winnipeg. It was hoped that the team would be luckier in 1998, as Winnipeg prepared to host its 2nd Winnipeg Grey Cup. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be. Hamilton Tigercats and Calgary Stampeders played an exciting game under near ideal conditions, with Calgary winning the championship, 26 - 24.

The International Hockey League's Manitoba Moose are one of the most recognized minor-league teams in North America.

This Olympic-size pool, one of the largest indoor bodies of water in the world, was built for the Pan-American Games which were held in Winnipeg in 1967.

The Pan-Am Pool is known as being "fast" among competitive swimmers where numerous records have been set.

The 22.86 metre (75 foot) by 68.58 metre (225 foot) pool features a 1.52 metre (five foot) wide movable steel bulkhead which separates the teaching section from the swimming and diving sections.

The building houses two 50m lap pools, a kiddy play pool, fitness facilities and the Aquatic Hall of Fame and the Museum of Canada.

The Aquatic Hall of Fame and Museum of Canada Inc. pays tribute to those in aquatics who have attained international renown.

Professional baseball has also returned to Winnipeg, as the WINNIPEG GOLDEYES rewarded their fans by winning the 1994 Northern League Championship.

1998 was the last season the team took on all comers in the Northern League at the Winnipeg Stadium. This season, their new home at The Forks, CanWest Global Park, is also the site of the baseball competition of the PanAm Games.
