November 1931 Oblong Oracle, Oblong, Illinois
JAMES SYLVESTER SMITH
James Sylvester, son of John B. and Nancy Smith was born August
16, 1848 near Robinson, Ill. He was one of a family of eight children
of whom Clark B. and Frank B. still survive, while William B., Martha Smith
Waldrop, Mary R., Harry and W. Bruce preceded him to the Great Beyond.
On April 11, 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Ziegler.
To this union were born six children. Three, Archie Leon, Kate Fern
and Frankie Rosalie died in early youth. Lucy Kirk and Clyde R.,
of Oblong and Ida Baldwin, of Iraan, Texas, are left behind who with their
mother, the eleven grandchildren, two brothers, other relatives, a host
of friends and neighbors feel deeply their loss. One infant grandson
preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith lived most of his life in and near Oblong. He
was known to be a man of kindly and quiet disposition, a good husband,
father and neighbor. He was honest, just and upright in all his dealings
and held the respect of both the old and the young. He was a member
of Central M.E. Church for over twenty-six years. He loved his church
and was faithful to his Lord.
His going from us so suddenly on Wednesday, Nov. 4th was a shock
to the entire community. Oblong has lost a valuable citizen but we
believe that our loss is his gain.
