What's up, what happened, and why not?

9/11 - 5 Years later and media saturation
photo

The only problem I have with all this week's war and remembrance stuff is...

  •  Yes... let's remember the tragedy and heroism of 9/11. (Our collective horror, shock, revulsion, anger, frustration, etc.)
  •  No... Let's not spend a week re-living it. (And that's what it seems the media is hell-bent to make happen.)

Considering we are now in the aftermath of the 5-year anniversary of 9/11, it is worth noting the lyrics from a song in my iTunes Library.

gUiLLeMoTs - Trains to Brazil

It's 1 o'clock on a Friday morning,
I'm trying to keep my back from the wall.
The prophets and their pawns have had another success
And I'm wondering why we bother at all.

And I think of you on cold winter mornings, darling
They remind me of when we were in school,
Nothing really mattered when you called out my name
In fact nothing really mattered at all

And I think about how long it will take them to blow us away
But I won't get me down!
I'm just thankful to be facing the day.
Cause days don't get you far when you're young.

It's 5 o' clock on a Friday morning
One hundred telephones shake and ring
One of those was someone who knew you

And I'll still think of you on cold winter mornings, darling
They'll still remind me of when we were in school
When they could never have persuaded me,
That lives like yours, were in the hands of these erroneous fools

And to those of you who mourn your lives through one day to the next
Well let them take you next!
Can't you live and be thankful you're here?
See - it could be you, tomorrow, next year.

So... to hell with the media!
Where's my iPod?

I couldn't agree more. I have had it watching people's hearts being wrenched all over again.
No one has to mention it , the calendar hanging on the wall is enough.

You're right on the mark. Just couldn't get away from all the "honoring" yesterday. Honoring is good, but this was just exploiting the grief, cut to commercial. Arghhhhh!!! Good to know others feel the same as I do. Thanks for the opp to vent. K.

The thing that always hits me in the heart on the 9/11 anniversary is this: We never know when we might be saying goodbye for the last time to our dear ones.

I spent part of yesterday reading "in memory" blog entries. I did not watch the reinactments of the horrors experienced by those trapped in the buildings or the arguments about whose version of history is accurate.

On a personal level, I know when I saw (very briefly, before the connection was overwhelmed and I lost it) the internet news flash about the first plane hitting the North Tower, I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach that the world had just changed in an irrevocable fashion.

I don't know if you read my poem about the day, it is personal but I shared it on my blog.

You are entirely right that this horrible tragedy needs to be remembered with respect and honor and not with commercial or political exploitation.
