With digital cameras, always shoot at full resolution!
It is this photo that taught me to always shoot at full resolution! I dumbed down the resolution on my HP 200 camera that day for web use and shot what might be the best photo of my son in the last 10 years - maybe ever. It's so low res, it's barely usable as wallet print - what you see here is as good as it gets.

This is what is keeping me from buying a camera phone, badly need a phone still. LOL With my camera I use a tripod, for the same reason as you describe here.
But this picture still beats those days we don't take any at all, just try again. ^_^
