James was a Baptist preacher. He served in the Revolutionary Line of North Carolina Soldiers. He was granted 68 acres in 1785, by R.C. Caswell, Governor. In 1789, Aaron Parker sold him 44 acres. |

James Jay Will March Term 1835
In the name of God Amen, This the fifth day of February and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three, I James Jay of the County of Person and state of North Carolina, calling to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for all men amen to die, do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following, (to wit) principally and first of all I recommend my precious and immortal soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it [??] and my body to be buried in a decent Christian burial and as to such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this world after my debts and funeral expenses are paid. Igive and dispose of the same in manner and form following.- Item first I give & bequeath to my wife Elizabeth Joy all her property that is remaining that she brought with her at our intermarriage together to her and her heirs forever. Item second. I lend unto my wife Elizabeth Joy during her life, and after her death to return to my heirs, one Gig and harness two cows and sow and pigs fifteen barrels of corn, five bushels of wheat and cotton wool and flax sufficient for her one year. Item third I give and bequeath to my son-in-law Aaron Scoggin two hundred dollars a bond I paid to James Williamson for him. Also one hundred dollars at the division of my estate to him and his heirs forever. Item fourth. My will and desire is that after the above name legacies are paid, that all my estate both real and personal remaining be equally divided amongst all my children, John Jay, Joseph Jay, James Jay, William Jay, Elizabeth Hargis, Sarah Morrow, Mary Cadwell, Lydda Scoggin, and Rachel Scoggin to them and their heirs forever. Item fifth I hereby nominate and appoint my son-in-law Aaron Scoggin and William W. Brown Executor for this my last will and testament ratifing and confirming this to be my last will whereunto I have set my hand and seal the year and date above written, signed sealed and published to be my last will and Testament.
