William Henry served with his father and 2 brothers, in Captain Braken's 5th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers, during the Mexican War. He was mustered in on Oct. 8, 1847 after enlisting Sept. 21, 1847 in Greenfield, Indiana. He appears on the rolls for Oct., 1847 - Dec. 31, 1847, Jan-Feb. 1848, Mar-April, 1848. In April of 1848, he was advanced $2.00 for clothing . 1 of shirt $.44, 2 pairs of socks, $.49 and 1 pair shoes, $1.16. He was mustered out in April of 1848. He served as a hospital attendent. |

After serving in the Union Army in the Civil War, William, with his family, moved to Pettis County, Missouri. That was some time about 1865 and they stayed there until about 1871, when they moved onto Red River County, Texas. Soon after, the family moved on to Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, where William bought land about a mile south of the Ahloso Y. This place was known as the "Chapman Farm" and the family lived on it until after William's death in 1903, at that time, his wife Carrie and son John moved to a house on the corner of 7th and Johnston in Ada. |
