" The wife of John Chapman was Rebecca Peace.  Her brother gave her an inscribed, ornamented brass tobacco box when she was twelve years of age and just before he left home to serve in the Revoluntianary War.  Rebecca was born in 1767 or thereabouts.  Her , John Chapman, was born in or near 1763."

" Later, John Chapman and his wife settled on a tract of land containing 640 acres in Meigs County, Ohio.  The choice of land was a good one being very level and well wooded.

The original log house built by John Chapman was not far from the western edge of the tract, near a stream, and in a well protected valley, about one mile from Steam Furnace.  Ten children were born to John and Rebecca Chapman, and quite likely they were all born in this log house.  Below is a picture of the house John and Rebecca later built.
