This picture is the only true documentation we have of our gg-grandfather, Joseph Phillips.  The history given here is compiled from his granddaughter's, Claudine Phillips Self,  memories of what was told to her of the family history concerning Joseph.   Aunt Claudine has been a tremendous help in supplying the pictures along with her memories.  Many thanks to her and yes, she's special !

The history of Joseph is very sketchy, his parents, place of birth, etc. is unknown, and so far this research has not come up with him in any of the normal ways.

We know that he had two marriages, 5 children, was in Little Rock, Arkansa in 1882 and moved his family to Missouri after that year....or so the story goes.

When Joseph married Sarah Ann Davis, circa of 1875-80, he brought with him 2 sons, Ed and Will, ages unknown, nor is their mother known or her circumstances.

Joseph and Sarah had three children, two sons; Hugh and James Benton, and one daughter, Eula.  At the time of Jim's birth the family was living in Little Rock, Arkansas.  This was in the year 1882.  Some time after the birth, Joseph moved his family to Missouri and bought a farm.  The location is unknown.

For an unknown reason, Joseph left the farm to Sarah and their 3 children, took the 2 older boys, Ed and Will, and went west to Conelbe, Washington.  It's said that he had a farm and/ or an apple orchard there.

Sarah lost the farm due to mis-management and with her children, moved to Lamar County, Texas.  Why she chose there is unknown, but the assumption is that she had family there.
