An argument ensued, he said, and Mr.
Buchanan cursed him and then drew
his revoler and fired. " I pulled my pistol
and fired back six times, " he said. Mr.
Buchanan dropped dead in the field, where
plans for an inquest were halted when it
was learned that Mr. Cook had surrendered

Previous trouble between the two men is respon-
sible for the exchange of shots Wednesday morn-
ing. However Mr. Cook offered no details about
the matter.

Mr. Buchanan was a land owner and farmer in the
Samtown community, a few miles from Newbern.
Mr. Cook operates the farm of his wife's mother,
which adjoins the Buchanan farm. Mrs. Cook
and two other women saw the shooting.

Funeral Pending
Mr. Buchanan's remains were removed from the
cotton field to the Elmer Holliman funeral parlors
Wedsnesday morning. Arrangements are pending
arrival of Mr. Buchanan's brothers from middle
Tennessee, the funeral director said Wednesday
afternoon.

Mr. Buchanan is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dora
Buchanan of Samtown community, and several bro-
thers in MiddleTennessee.
