Generation No. 1

1.  ISAAC1 SPENCE was born 1745 in  Duplin, NC, and died in Harnett Co, NC.  He married MARY ELIZABETH BOWDEN 1769 in Duplin Co, NC, daughter of NICHOLAS BOURDEN and PRUDENCE DAVIS.  She was born 30-Mar-1744.

Notes for ISAAC SPENCE:

Isaac Spence bought land in Duplin County:  (1) from John Hart, 100 Acres on 12-17-1789; (2) from Jephtha Daniel, 100 Acres in 1795 (wittness to this transfer was Timothy Spence). Isaac was granted 50 Acres in 1799.  Isaac, a planter, sold 40 Acres to John Kornegay in 1801, and sold 132 Acres on Lake Savannah to Giles Thomas Loftin in the "County of Lanoir" and identified the tract as the "plantation where Isaac Spence now lives."  Therefore, Isaac moved to Northern Cumberland in 1810.

2.  JOHN2 SPENCE (ISAAC1) was born 1770.  He married BIDDA SPENCE.  She was born 1780.

Notes for BIDDA SPENCE:

The 1850 Census shows Bidda Spence, wife of John Spence, to be living alone in Northern Cumberland Co, NC.  It shows her to be born in 1780 (age 70).

3.  ELISHA2 SPENCE (ISAAC1) was born Abt. 1775.  He married NANCY WOOD 25-Nov-1823 in Johnston Co, NC.

4.  TIMOTHY W.2 SPENCE, SR. (ISAAC1) was born 1779 in Northern Dist, Cumberland, NC, and died 1853 in Hector's Creek Twp, Harnett, NC.  He married MARTHA FUTCH 1820.  She was born 1780, and died 1853 in Hector's Creek Twp, Harnett, NC.

Notes for TIMOTHY W. SPENCE, SR.:

As reported by Walter M. Pearson of Chalybeate Springs in 1934, and subsequently reported by James M. Spence to W L Robbins,  Timothy built a log house near the present Christian Light community. In 1934, W H Lee resided near this spot.  Timothy acquired lands extending from his home eastward across Hector's Creek.  The place later became the Ausley home and there  in an old Spence graveyard behind the house.  There are no names cut into the stones, but Willoby T. Spence said that Isaac and Timothy and Matthew Spence were buried there.

The 1850 Census shows Timothy, age 71 and Martha, age 70 living alone in Northern Cumberland Co, NC

5.  TIMOTHY3 SPENCE (JOHN2, ISAAC1) was born 1806 in Duplin Co, NC.  He married ELIZABETH"POLLY" SPAIN 09-Dec-1820 in Cumberland Co, NC, daughter of THOMAS SPAIN.  She was born 1810 in Northern Cumberland Co, NC.

Notes for TIMOTHY SPENCE:

Timothy W. Spence, Son-in-Law, mentioned in the will of Thomas Spain written in December, 1854.  There was no mention of Polly, Tim's wife and Thomas' daughter.

6.  JAMES D. SPENCE3 SR (ELISHA2 SPENCE, ISAAC1) was born 1800.  He married NANCY PATE 01-Jan-1825 in Johnston Co, NC.  She was born 1803.

Notes for JAMES D. SPENCE SR:

The records of Dr. John McKay in Buies Creek, NC, show that he set a fractured are for James Spence Sr. on July 25, 1833 "upriver" and charged him $8.00.

The 1850 Census shows one "Nancy Williams", born in 1773 (age 77) to be living with James.

7.  WILLIAM R.3 SPENCE (ELISHA2, ISAAC1) was born 1804 in Northern Cumberland Co, NC.  He married CATHERINE SPENCE.  She was born 1814.

Notes for WILLIAM R. SPENCE:

The 1850 Census shows one "Elizabeth Spence" living with William and Catherine and shown to be born in 1773 (age 77).  This could have been his grandmother, Elizabeth Bouden and wife of Isaac Spence; however, she would have been 28 years younger than Isaac, who was thought to be born in 1745.
