Beaton steers A Cat Wasp to second victory of season
Tom Beaton, at the helm of the A Cat he and his father built 11 years ago, steered the Wasp to its second victory of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association yesterday.

In doing so, the Wasp, owned by Nelson Hartranft Jr., was awarded the Scorers Trophy, presented by Shore Acres Yacht Club, Brick Township, which hosted the BBYRA's fifth regatta of the season on Barnegat Bay's Green Island Course.

Awarded for the first time yesterday, this trophy has a story of evolution all its own, thanks to Donald Turner, a founding member of Shore Acres Yacht Club, who named the trophy in honor and recognition of the BBYRA's scoring fraternity.

Turner acquired a medallion in Europe that was issued at about the same time the first A Cats were built back in the early 1920's.  When he returned home, he had the medallion mounted on a silver bowl, which sits on a specially made octagonal-shaped base.  On each side of the bases eight sides are raised plates with the names of the six existing A Cats --  Wasp, Tamwock, Spy, Bat, Mary Ann & Lotus -- plus a seventh, which Beaton is currently building at his family's boatyard in Mantoloking, to be named Ghost. The trophy stands about 18 inches tall.
