One of several Italianate houses, the oversized decorative brackets appear to brace the asymmetrical, overhanging hipped roof. Marcene Hobart, the first occupant, was a prosperous merchant and businessman. The modern entrance replaces a wraparound porch with rail and columnar supports and a flat roof with a low rail decorative detail. Old wooden porches were difficult to maintain and were often replaced with built-in living space as this example demonstrates. The original crowns over the windows have been replaced. |
