CONGRESS SHOWING INTEREST IN BABY BODY PARTS TRAFFICKING

Both houses of the U. S. Congress have begun to react to reports of a growing industry built upon the selling of body parts of aborted babies. The November, 1999 issue of National Right To Life News (NRL News) reports that in late late October Senator Bob Smith (R-NH) offered a proposal requiring detailed reporting on transactions involving body parts of babies killed by abortion. The proposal failed to pass by a close vote of forty-six to fifty-one, with forty-five Republicans and one Democrat voting for , and seven Republicans and forty-four Democrat voting against the measure. Louisiana Senator John Breaux voted in favor of and Senator Mary Landrieu voted against the proposed action. Senator Smith has expressed his intention to continue to pursue the issue during the congressional session that begins this month. By contacting our two senators, especially Senator Landrieu, and telling them of our support for Senator Smith's proposal, we may be able to add a vote a vote to the pro-life column.

Two weeks after the Senate vote, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution spomsored by Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-Co.) calling Congress to hold hearings when they reconvene early this year "and take appropriate steps if necessary concerning private companies that are involved in the trafficking of baby body parts for profit." Since this resolution was adopted by a voice vote, no record of how individual members of Congress voted is available.

While it is true that any legislation concerning this grave issue may be nullified by a presidential veto, the debating by our elected officials of the gruesome nature of the business should be helpful in bringing the truth to the public, thereby bringing about a greater respect for life, life given to us by God.
