The June 17-23, 2001 issue of National Catholic Register reports that Priests for Life, a national pro-life organization headed by its National Director, Father Frank Pavone, has called for an investigation of the abortion industry in view of the many cases where women or young girls have been treated poorly during and following the abortion procedure, some of them bleeding to death as a result of inattention.
In full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today, Priests for Life calls the abortion industry "one of the most unregulated surgical procedures in the nation," and calls on pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood to join them in investigating and regulating the industry. The ad described cases where women died or were left permanently damaged due to wounds received during the abortion and to failure to receive proper care immediately thereafter. Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion advocates say they want to protect women's best interests; yet they resist every effort to regulate the industry in order to avoid unnecessary damage to women's health. If they truly have at heart the wellbeing of women, why not join with Priests for Life in asking that abortion clinics being required to meet the same health standards as those required of hospitals.
