Since abortion became legal throughout our country in 1973, there have been many instances where, during an attempted abortion, the baby was not successfully killed, but instead was born alive. In some cases, such babies have been intentionally suffocated or left to die an agonizing death with little or no attention given.
The Born Alive Infants Protection Act, which passed the House last year but was defeated in the Senate, would grant protection under federal law to a newborn baby described by the bill as being "completely expelled or extracted" from the mother at any stage of development. This proposal is to be reintroduced in both the House and Senate again this year. In a statement reported in the July 1, 2001 issue of Our Sunday Visitor, staunch pro-life advocate Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said that it is incomprehensible that such legislation should have to be presented, or that there would be groups that oppose it. It seems so obvious that an innocent baby struggling for life should be given assistance, even if ultimately he or she is expected to die.
It will be interesting to see how our elected officials vote, and if it becomes law, how the courts rule on this proposal.
