The September issue of National Right To Life News (NRL News) reports that nurse Jill Stanek was fired from her job with Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois on August 31, 2001 because of her stand against the hospital's abortion policy. The hospital is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the United Church of Christ. Her most shocking accusation is that lateterm babies who survive abortion attempts have been left to die, survival time ranging from just minutes to a few hours, struggling for breath, without receiving life supporting assistance.
In her July, 2001 testimony before congress, nurse Stanek said the hospital now has a "Comfort Room" where babies surviving abortion stay until they die. This was described as "a small nicely decorated room" where parents can take photographs of their dying babies, baptize them and make footprints for keepsakes. It is difficult to see how anyone who had just ordered the death of their unborn child could then pretend to be loving parents as their baby slowly and painfully has its life slip away. This addition to the hospital's facilities seems to be more for the "comfort" of those responsible for the baby's death, certainly not for the baby.
The Born-Alive Infants Protection Act which is attached to the HMO regulation bill would give full legal rights to babies surviving abortion. Let's tell our two U.S. Senators and our Congressman that we support this bill.
