FINALLY, SOME POETRY

As you know, I am in the process of finishing up a degree in the computer support field. Because of that, I am required to take many seemingly unrelated courses. An English course, recently finished by me, gave me the option of writing poetry for my term project. The requirements were to write at least five poems on the same theme and present them orally to the class. I did so and got an A for my project. I will share them with you here. Remember, poetry works best if you read it out loud; even if it is to yourself, alone.

THE SOLDIER AND THE IRON HORSE

A collection of poems about 28 April 1986

MEDFORD STREET

Eight lanes converging, no, nine,
As all tried to make good time,
Some traffic lights were bad,
Enough to make some drivers mad.

The sedan had red,
But went ahead,
As the soldier with the iron horse,
Entered at yellow without remorse.

He avoided the sedan,
But soundly cursed the man,
And made him stop,
And spill hot coffee in his lap.

The bike recovered and drove past,
Distracted, still yellow, and not too fast,
It was the unexpected bus with green AND red,
Who almost made our soldier dead.

What I looked like, back then!
