[NI0362] Notes for BENJAMIN LEWIS:
Benjamin Lewis had a deed June 12, 1772 from Ezra Fellows of Sheffield, Mass. of land on Maple Hill in West Stockbridge, originally laid out to David Naunanneckanuck. At first town meeting in West Stockbridge, June 28, 1774, Benajmin Lewis was made clerk and treasurer, having settled in town from Avon, Conn., then Northington, a part of Farmington. Before he left Northington, a church was organized in 1750 and the meetings were held at the hime of Benjamin before the meeting house was completed in 1754. the house was on the east side of the Farmington River, near the old burying ground. "The History of Hartford County, P. 5, gives facts relating to the organization of the church which grew out of separate meetings held as early as 1746. It is very likely that the meetings were held at the house of a Benjamin Lewis, father of this Benjamin, for the latter was not married until 1754 and was not likely to have been a householder in 1750.

Sources for all of Benjamin Lewis' children and grandchildren were taken from the LDS Records and a book, "Pioneer Lewis Families, Copyright 1978 by Michael L. Cook, C.G. He got his sources from the 'Lewisiana", 1887-1907, various articles.

Nathaniel Merriman and wife Olney, who settled in Wallingford in 1670. Ebenezer Lewis settled in eastern part of Wallingford in 1684. In new Haven, CT., probate records give April 17,1711, the distrubutionof estated of Ebenezer lewis to widow and ten children, and Apri 7, 1713 estate of the eldest son Hezekiah divided in 9 parts. Evidently his wife Abagail died before his death in 1711, and in the absense of children, his brothers and sisters became his heirshis mother waiving her rights in his estate. William Fredricks exhibited May 19, 1713 return for the estated which was accepted. There were then living in 1713, ten children of Ebenezer. See Lewisiana, Vol. xv, p161-162

He was the son of Abraham Doolittle and Mercy Holt. Mary is not included in most lists of children, but knowing there was a 10th child, and her name appears on most deeds with that of her husband as heirs of Ebenezer Lewis, it appears this is correct. Deed january 29, 1729, Heirs of Ebenezer Lewis to Sergt. Hohn Hall. a piece of land that was Ebenezer Lewis and "known by ye name of the elbo"....included the names Abraham Doolittle and Mary Doolittle among assignors, Also Deed, p 419, vol 6, Wallingford dated August 6, 1728, l;ast parties signed January 17, 1731, recorded January 21, 1731 gives all the children of Ebenezer lewis then living with the exception of Benjamin and in case of the daughters, with their husbands names. Mary and her husband settled in Cheshire parish, north of the village, being among it's eaarliest inhabitants.

Aurelia Lewis was the daughter of Abisha Lewis and Sarah Scripture Lewis. She was born in West Center, Berkshire, Massachusetts.

two different spellings of her first name.

[NI0516] Notes for LYMAN HINMAN:
Lyman Hinman was a wealthy merchant in West Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He married Aurelia Lewis on August 16, 1819. Her father, Abishi Lewis thought Lyman was a sinful person because he drove his horse and buggy the four miles from West Stockbridge to West Center to court Aurelia on the Sabbath day.

Lyman was a merchant and farmer and also a millwright. Lyman was Justice of The Peace in West Stockbridge from 1834 for seven years.

Lyman and Aurelia's first son was born in 1823 and died when he was five years old. The minister came and bemoaned the fact that the child had not been baptized. "It's a shame that such a beautiful child should be condemned to Hell", he said to Lyman. Lyman replied, "Don't you think Aurelia is suffering enough without talking to her like that? Anyway, I do not believe that he will go to hell just because he has not been sprinkled. Little children are pure and innocent. That was twelve years before he heard the Mormon gospel.

No playing ball or other games for their little children on Sunday. They were not even permitted to pick a flower from those which lined the path as they went to church. They just sat quietly after church and read and memorized the chatechism -- that is what the older ones did, who could read. I can't imagine what the smaller ones did.

They had a twenty-two (22) room house. The third floor was a ball room which was kept so well waxed that Helen, the youngest of the family, could not walk across it without falling down. Her eldest sister, Evaline, had a governess who made her walk back and forth across the long room to get the correct "carriage and poise" for a lady until she was so tired. She said once she was never more tired from hours of hard work later in life.

They had a large brick oven opening out of doors where Aurelia did her baking once a week. They built the fire right in the oven. Whenever enough embers were raked out and swept down clean, then cakes went in first, pies, and then bread and last a whole bushel of apples. Helen said she would never forget how good these smelled when taken out. Other times the children would hide in the oven when their cousins came to play. There were large trees all around the house and a swing in one of them. They had their gold plated table service with the family crest stamped or engraved on it. The family crest also adorned the knocker on the front door, the silver mountings on the harness, etc.

Lyman's father, Enoch Hinman, did not belong to any church. He said to Lyman one time, "The true church is not on the earth but it is coming; I will not live to see it, but thee will, and when thee hears it, thee will know it is true." And Lyman did. Enoch died in 1838, before the Mormon Elders came to that part of Massachusetts. Lyman first heard the gospel in 1840, preached by William Hyde. He immediately applied for baptism. Elder Lamb suggested he wait two weeks and think it over. Lyman answered, "I've waited all my life, just as my father did", so he was baptized then.

Aurelia was a real aristocrat and these Mormons were not for her, but after two years, she too was baptized. Their youngest child, Helen, was three (3) years old when Lyman sold his store for what he could get for it, and being unable to sell the house gave it to the city. They packed up their five (5) children and headed west to join the Saints. They migrated to Nauvoo in 1843. When they left their home in West Stockbridge, they went via Buffalo and crossed Lake Erie. Lyman secured passage for the family on a boat which was soon to leave. When it came time to go to the boat, Aurelia said, "Let us be off." But, Lyman did not want to go. Aurelia fussed about it. Lyman said, "Never mind, I'll get thee a better boat." On arrival, they learned that the other boat had burned at sea and all lives were lost.

They arrived in Salt Lake City on September 20, 1848, five years after leaving their home of plenty. Five years of hardships we cannot imagine, and still more to come. They endured cold, hunger, sickness, and diseases brought on by these circumstances but remained true and faithful. They came to Salt Lake City with President Brigham Young's second company.

Corn did not ripen and so moulded on the cob. They would shell off the best of it, dry it the best they could and grind it in the coffee mill, mix it with water and cook into small cakes which were so strong, they made their mouths sore. They had scurvy so bad that a silver tube Aurelia had had put in her head to correct a weeping sinus leading from her eye, came out the roof of her mouth, and she could take her double teeth out herself they were so loosened by the disease.

Lyman and his sons, Morgan and Henry, were carpenters and lumbermen. They built many of the first mills in Utah, in Farmington, Davis County. Lyman also worked in the lumber business in Santiquin. He also studied the use of herbs and was a homepatic doctor ministering to the sick as did Aurelia most of her life. Some years ago, one of these old mills was torn down in Davis County. The Hinman men's names were found carved on one of the large timbers. The workmen said the workmanship was perfect with joints fitted so well -- good enough for a piano.

Lyman attended the Farmington Ward, Davis, Utah, Utah Stake.

Lyman was a member of the Vermillion Settlement Branch in 1845. (Iowa)

Lyman was always doing things for other people who needed help. He was a very lovable man and people felt they could tell him any of their troubles, problems or sorrows and he would always understand them and help them in some way. He was well off and if people needed money, he saw they received it. He gave the church thousands of dollars to build chapels and temples and all other things needed.

Lyman died in 1864 and Aurelia in 1868 in Farmington, Davis, Utah. They are buried in the cementery there.

the fire, while his mother was absent, the cross-bar* broke and a
kettle of soap fell, which would have killed the child had not
Colonel STANLEY snatched him up. Colonel STANLEY was then (1664)
living in Hadley [Massachusetts], and when he returned to Hartford
[Connecticut], a few year later (prior to 1669), he probably took the
child and reared him in his family."

*"The inflammable chimneys of logs and clay, hurriedly and readily
built by the first settlers, soon gave place in all houses to vast
chimneys of stone, built with projecting inner ledges, on which
rested a bar about six or seven or eight feet from the floor, called
a lug-pole or back-bar. This was made of green wood and thus
charred slowly--but it charred surely in the generous flames of the
great chimney heart. The destruction of a dinner sometimes was
attended with the loss of a life. Later the back-bars were made of
iron."
