Beckmann

  According to Family History :   Peter Lord Heinrich "Henry" Beckmann was born in Hannover, Germany on December 7, 1862.    "Henry's Father (I do not know the name) was reported to have been married twice with 9 children per each wife.  I don't know if "Henry" was the son of the first or second marriage.  Sometime in his youth "Henry" had gotten caught in a winter rain and got wet.  As punishment his mother forbade him to change to dry clothing right away.  He was sick for sometime and had a "Lung affliction" the rest of his life.   "Henry" came to America in 1880, when he was 18 years old.  He soon got homesick and returned to Germany.  He returned to America in 1882 in order to avoid the German military.  Plus he apparently developed a liking for American Food..    "Henry" worked on farms for people who sponsored his passage to America.   Sophie Christine Wilhelmine Knake  was born in Leipzig Germany on June 19, 1863.  Sophie came to America as a Nursemaid to an invalid child belonging to fairly wealthy parents.  Family History was not clear as to if it was Sophie that was working in Nebraska or if it was "Henry" but  somehow "Henry" and Sophie met in Indiana and were married in Gar Creek, Indiana on March 7, 1886.  "Henry" and Sophie had eight children.  They are:  Mary S., Frederick, Minnie L., Henry, Sophie Louise, Louise Marie ( My Grandmother), William and Anna.    "Henry" used to like to walk to town along the rail road, to get beer.   One time he fell in a ditch and got cold and wet.  He was again sick for quite some time. On one of his later trips to town (in 1902 or 1903)  he stopped to rest, on the rail, and a train came by and hit him. It did not kill him but he was injured. (Family History did not specify exactly what type of injury)    Sophie died in August of 1904.   Thus with remorse and sorrow for the loss of his wife, "Henry" felt he had nothing to live for and Wishing his children "Good Luck", he informed them they would never see him again and he left (in February 1905)  to work in Danville, Illinois as Crossing Watchman for the Wabash Company.   "Henry" died in December of that same year.  Some say that Sophie had been a "Hellion" and did not make his life too pleasant"   The Eldest daughter of "Henry" and Sophie (Mary)  was married at the time of her father's departure, so she kept and raised her younger siblings.  Mary worked "in the homes of New Haven People".   All the children went to work as soon as they were old enough.    Sophie Louise got a job in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the Knitting Mills, when she was 16 years old.   As soon as Louise Marie (My Grandmother) finished the 6th grade, she moved to Ft. Wayne and moved in with Sophie Louise.  Louise Marie then also got a job at the Knitting Mills.
