John Wrightsman Sr, born about 1740, was an early settler in Botetourt County, VA. He married Christian(e) Coulter on 29 Aug 1784, a possible second marriage for him. The name of his first wife and the location of his first marriage are not known at this time, although 2 children are known and 2 others are not proven.

NOT PROVEN, but we are trying to locate documentation that John's second wife (Christiane) is the daughter of James Coalter and Margaret Hutson of Augusta County (Christianna).

This John Wrightsman Senior may be the same John Wrightsman that records his mark in Orange County, NC in Aug 1761 and is a witness to a land purchase by Peter Wrightsman on 14 Aug 1764, Orange County, NC. The John Writesman that shows up in 1798 and 1800 records is a younger John Writesman, probably a nephew.

This page is to document, as accurately as possible, the Wrightsman name with all its various spellings: Wrightsman, Wrightsmann, Writesman, Writsman, Rightsman, Ritesman, Ritsman/Ritzman, Rytzman, Rytsman, Reitzman, and the original Reitzmann. Other possible spellings in documents and extractions include Wristman, Wightman, Wrightman, Rightman, Righman, Rechtman, and Richman.

It is also an attempt to tie together the early Wrightsman families that have been found in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The Virginia Wrightsmans seem to have migrated west more, with some Church of the Brethren lines (descendants of Samuel Wrightsman Sr) settling in Illinois, Nebraska and Kansas. The North Carolina Writesmans appear to have stayed mostly in the southeastern US, although one group of NC Writesmans/Wrightsmans ended up in Clay County, MO in 1818. (See Clay County, MO Writesmans or Mystery Wrightsmans). Current information from a descendant of these Clay County Writesmans has given us much detail on this group. We also have information from 4 descendants of Abraham Wrightsman, originally from Orange County, NC, but migrating into OH and IN.

Whenever possible, we will supply links to the web pages of descendants working on connecting families, or to any web site that has ties to the Wrightsman name. NOTE: ALL LINKS ARE SUPPLIED MERELY AS A COURTESY. PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE IN ACCEPTING AS FACT ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL'S DATA.
