"All that in this delightful garden grows, Should happy be, and save immortal bliss". Edmund Spenser (1552-1599).
The Lebanese family name Boustany is classified as being of occupational origin. It can be said that the most ancient and most interesting of surnames are those derived from the occupation of the original bearer.
Occupational names have provided what has been described by scholars as "an inventory of the common brades of medieval times". Such names offer a glimpse into the daily lives of our ancestors. With regard to the surname Boustany, we have a derivation of the old arabic term denoting a garden. Here it refers to one engaged in the care and maintenance of a garden, itself a most essential task in the arid climate of those regions. Gardens were not only considered things of great beauty, but also essential to the feeding of the local populace. Variants of the surname Boustany includes bUstany, and BoustanI. One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of one called Fouad Ephrem Boustany, born at Deirl El-Kamar on 15th. August 1906, however research is of course on going and this name may have been documented even earlier then the date indicated above. Lebanese public records are replete with references in the form BoustanY and bUstanI during 20th century. Since there are no arms currently on record in this exact name, we append a derivation of the arms of Lebanon.
BLAZON OF ARMS : Gules, a bend sinister argent, charged with a Cedar of Lebanon vert.
CRESC : A Cedar of Lebanon as in the arms.
ORIGIN : LEBANON
