W. K. Spence was born in Lawrence County, Kentucky, August 2, 1845 and was 2 years of age when his parents, Alexander and Vinia Johnson Spence made their home in Wayne Couty, West Virginia. His father was born in Tazewell County, Virginia, October 1822 and his mother was born in 1823 in Lawrence County, Kentucky.
The marriage of W. K. Spence and Albinia Steed was solemnized March 30, 1865 in Lawrence County, Ohio. Nine children were born to this union:
Alex - March 7, 1866 Roseann - February 24, 1867 Will - July 27, 1868 Wade - October 11, 1870 Sarah Margaret - September 6, 1872 Lucy - May 28, 1875 Harvey - February 25, 1877 Martha Ellen - February 5, 1879 Farabelle - September 23, 1881
The wife of W. K. Spence was born in Kanawha County, West Virginia, October 12, 1841, and she was the daughter of George and Margaret Burdett Steed. Her parents were born in Kanawha County, Virginia. Her father died in 1853 and her mother in 1855.
During the Civil War, Spence served the Federal cause nine months from a sense of duty, and without pay in the state troops. He served six years as member of the Board of Education; four years as road surveyor, and school trustee from his district for a number of years.
He owns a farm of 235 acres on Cove Creek and Hezekiah's Creek, 35 acres under cultivation with good buildings on it and the rest in timber with coal, iron ore, and building stone.
He is a member of the United Baptist Church and moderator of Enon and Mt. Olive churches.
