In the Beerfelden parish registers, the name Seip is frequently mentioned according to
"The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine", (1993), German Origins of Northampton
County Settlers, page. 11-15. In "The History of Lehigh County", page 510, the author
states between 1735 and 1750 the families of Seip among others settled on land along the
Jordan River, in the western part of what is now known as North Whitehall. Therefore, it
is possible that other family members were already in this country when Johann Peter and
Jacob arrived.
For example, we found the will of Melchoir Seip of Macungie Township. Probated
February 25, 1797. The executors were John and Peter Seip. In Roberts "History of
Lehigh Co.", Vol 1, page 997, the village of Seipstown, located in Weisenberg Township
on the road leading from Allentown to Hamburg, was founded by John Seip, whose
Grandfather, Melchoir Seip came from Wirtemberg before 1747 and settled in what is now
Upper Macungie Township. Melchoir Seip also paid taxes in 1762 in Upper Macungie
Township (page 907), and in 1781 as a resident of Weisenberg Township (page 975).
Included as taxable for Upper Macungie Township. Were Adam G. Seip in 1781, and
Peter Seip in 1812 (page 907) while John Seip was taxable in 1812 in Weisenberg
Township (page 975). Lori has Melchoir listed as the son of Jacob. I am not certain of this
But have listed him as such as well.
We also found a will for Conrad Seip of Whitehall Township dated Sept 12, 1782 and
witnessed by Michael Mofser and Jacob Wirth (WB 1, page 310, North Co.) He had
Brothers and sisters, executor was his wife. A Conrad Seip of Lehigh, Whitehall Township
Was born Sept 25, 1791 and christened Sept 28, 1791 but died Oct. 2, 1791. Parents were
Listed as Peter Seip and wife Susanna Kreylein. Other children of Peter and Susanna
Keylein were George Peter, born Jan 21, 1790; Maria Catharina, born Oct. 1, 1792; J.
George, born Nov.3, 1793, and a second Conrad, born April 5, 1795. This Conrad
Apparently married M. Catharina (BP Oct 16, 1774). Other children of Peter and Susanna
Were Susanna, born May 24, 1796, Magdalena, born May 9, 1799; William, born February
8, 1808; Lydia, born Jan 18, 1809; and Eva, born February 28, 1814. Maria Catharina
Married Daniel Kennel. Magdalena married Michael Zollner (sp?) and had at least one
Child, a son, David, born March 27, 1823.
Another search of Beerfelden Parish records revealed Elisabetha Christina Seip, born
February 19, 1733, who was the daughter of Conrad Seipp of Gammelsbach and his wife?
Maria Elisabetha. In time, Elisabetha Christina married Johannes Schumpter, a master
Mason in Gammelsbach, on Jan. 3, 1757. They had three offspring: Conrad, born June 2,
1757; Eliza Barbara, born Oct 11, 1758; and Maria Catharina, born February 6, 1760 and
Died March 16, 1762. Johannes Schumpter also died Dec. 28, 1761 and Elisabeth
Christina married John Adam Sandt on Nov 23, 1762. They had at least two children:
Catharine Elisabeth, born Nov 18, 1763; and Wilhelm Adam born Jan 30, 1765 but died
March 16, 1766. Elisabeth and John Sandt and their children came to Philadelphia via the
Ship "Chance" in September 1766 and settled in Northampton County. They are listed as
Communicants at the Williams Township Church, just south of Easton, on April 19, 1767.
Seipp was also spelled Seip, Seib, and Sipe. In "Thirty Thousand Names of Immigrants
From 1727-1776 by Rupp (1965) published by Genealogical Reference Company,
Baltimore the following Seip's were found:
(1.) Philip Seip arrived in Philadelphia, October 4, 1752, on the ship Neptune, Captain
John Mason from Rotterdam and last Cowes.
(2.) George Conrad, Johan Seib and Johan Wilhelm Seip arrived in Philadelphia via the
Chance on Sept 23, 1766, Master Charles Smith, from Rotterdam and last Cowes. 200

JOHANN PETER SEIP:
The majority of the early German settlers were farmers from the Palatinate region of
Germany. Their ancestors were a group of Germanic tribes called the Rheinfranken, with
an admixture of Alemanni. The great rivers of Europe such as the Rhine and the Danube,
traversed their lands. They were considered excellent, hard-working, farmers with a
Reputation for keen wit, an indomitable spirit, and with a high degree of intelligence. At
That time, Germany was divided up into loosely related principalities, without a central
Government. But years of religious and civil wars beginning with the Reformation had
Resulted in famine, untold misery, and suffering for the Palatinate people. Untold blood
Was even spilt between the Lutherans and the Reformed faiths, which the Catholics used
To their advantage. By the time the peace treaty of 1697 at Rynswick between France and
Germany was signed, the Protestant Church had little left. The Catholic Church had seized
Most of the property. The Protestants were forced to bend the knee at the passing of the
Host and had few rights. Hence, when William Penn traveled to Germany and distributed
pamphlets inviting emigration to Pennsylvania where he promised religious and political
Freedom for all, he found many willing to risk the hazardous ocean crossing and join his
"Holy Experiment".
Although the Germans were early settlers in New York, Maryland, Virginia, North and
South Carolina, as well as Georgia, the majority came to Penn's Woods. So much so that
By the time of the Revolution there were estimated to be 100,000 German-speaking
Colonists in Pennsylvania alone. There were roughly three waves of German immigration
Into Pennsylvania. The first period from 1683 - 1710 began when the Concord landed in
Philadelphia, October 6, 1683, with a small number of Germans and Dutch Mennonites
Who came from Crefeld and Kriegsheim on board. This group under the leadership of
Francis Daniel Pastorius settled in what is now Germantown. From 1710 - 1727, the Swiss
Mennonites began to arrive. Also due to difficulties in owning land in New York, German
Settlers left New York via the Susquehanna River and started a community called
Tulpehocken, in Berks County. Unfortunately, few records were kept of the names of the
Early arrivals. This changed on October 14, 1727, when the Provincial Council adopted a
Resolution mandating that all masters of vessels importing Germans and other foreigners
Make a list of such persons. Furthermore, these immigrants would have to sign on oath of
Allegiance to the king of England, and of fidelity to the Proprietary of Pennsylvania.
Generally, the lists contain only the names of men from age sixteen and up because either
Most women were unable to write or were considered subservient. Men who could not
Write was permitted to sign an "X" next to their names. Since the German names were
Being translated to English, family names were often misinterpreted but based on the
Phonetic spelling can often be traced. Thus, the third period began in 1727 and ended with
The beginning of the Revolution in 1776.
These Germanic people with Swiss and Huguenots mixed in are the ancestors of the
"Pennsylvania Germans" or " Deutsch" Anglicized to "Dutch" who arrived in America
Before the Revolution or at least before 1800. Later German arrivals were more easily
Assimilated and are not counted as being from the same areas of Germany or with the same
General characteristics. The later arrivals did not contribute to the customs, art, and
Culture of Lancaster and the many other counties in Pennsylvania settled by the earlier
Immigrants. (The source for the above history is from "Early Life of the Pennsylvania
Germans written by A. Monroe Aurand, Jr. published by the Aurand Press, Lancaster, Pa.)
Therefore, in order to escape religious persecution for their Protestant beliefs, the Seip
Family left Gammelsbach, Germany, and sailed for the "New World." Peter arrived in
Philadelphia on the ship "Brothers" in September 22, 1752. He was 17 years old. He
Signed his "X" mark to the Oath of Abjuration on Sept 22., along with Johann George
Holtzschuh (list 179C). The ship had sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, and then England.
The captain was William Muir. His family name has been recorded as Seib and Sipe on
Records taken from the original master's list. Peter's father, Johann Jacob, died in Germany
Shortly before their departure, and his mother, Anna Elisabetha, sickened during the
Voyage and died at sea. He was accompanied by his older sister, Elisabetha Christiana and
Her husband, Johann Georg Holtzschu or Holtzschuh, as well as their younger brother,
Jacob, and Sister Rosina. We have no further information on the other siblings: Ann
Elisabetha or Johann Georg or Anna Maria. They were probably meeting other family
Members already in Pa. (see Johann Jacob's notes) but we have yet to make a definite
Connection.
With land purchased from Henry Hagland, the original settler, Peter Seip built the tavern
Known today as "Seipsville Hotel" in 1760. This hotel is referred to in the "Manuscript
History of Northampton Co." by Matthew S. Henry. Thanks to the efforts of Palmer
Historical Society, the hotel was placed on the state and national registers of historical
Sites in April 1976. There was a free running spring in the cellar. Beneath the eaves on the
North side of the building etched in stone was "Peter Seip, 1760" but for reasons
Unknown, this has been removed. Many important meetings were held there, including the
Separation of Palmer Township from Forks in 1857. It is still in use today as a restaurant.
Peter Seip was a member of the local militia formed to fight off Indians. The militia was
Headed by Capt. John Arndt. (Johan Bernhardt Arndt, Jacob and David Arndt both under
The age of 16, arrived in Phila. Sept 11, 1731 via the "Pa Merchant", Joseph Stedman,
Master, from Rotterdam, last from Dover.) During the Revolutionary War, from June 6,
1780 to May 22, 1782, Peter was a private, First Class, 2nd Battalion Militia, under Capt
Jacob Buss. In the first census of the U.S. from 1790, he was listed as the head of the
Household. On March 1, 1780, when slavery was abolished in Pa, he owned one slave.
The executors of Peter's will (#2592,dated 1809) were his son Jacob and son-in-law
Nathaniel. It was witnessed by Philip Odenwelder. A codicil wills "his son John, messuage,
Land and tenement in Forks, adjacent Jacob Seip-- part of land late of Frederick Wagner &
Nicholas Kreamer, Thomas Hartman, & John Rohn, 132 acres 12 perches. It being part of
The land which Casper Erb and wife Mary by Indenture Sept 19, 1763. Also 18 acres of
Proprietors of Manor of farmer called the Dry Lands. To his son Jacob, message,
Tenement & tavern where I (Peter) now live and tract they're to belonging in Forks, adjacent
Christian Butz, Michael Walters, Peter Shnyder, and Frederick Wagner, 74 acres. A tract
In Plainfield adjoining John Arndt, 140 acres to John and Jacob."
Peter and Anna Maria are buried in Easton Cemetery, Section C, which is straight though
The main gate, on the right hand-side of the drive, next to a tall dead tree. They're combined
Tombstone is flat on the ground, and is written in German but is still legible. Next to there
Graves, is a raised oblong monument belonging to Sitgreaves and Michler. Elizabeth
Michler was Peter and Anna Maria's granddaughter as her father was Jacob Seip. Behind
Their graves in an enclosed iron fence, is a tall, impressive, monument, a tribute to the
"Ihrie" family. Peter and Anna Maria's daughter married Conrad Ihrie, Jr

James Norton was a kind, gentleman, was one of the few bull Whackers living. When he was only 15, He was driving the lead wagon of seven yoke of oxen on a 100, Wagon train. Celebrating his 73 rd. Birthday ,Sat.
Was as proud of it as a boy with his first pair of boots. He is one of the pioneers of the west, having come to he Rocky Mountain region more then 60, years ago. And has lived here, according to his own statement, off and on ever since. As a boy spent his early manhood in the wild and woolly west. He inlisted in the army at 17, years old and served on the frontier in compay M, of the second Cavalry during the Civil War, acting much of the time as a escort for the United States Mail between Fort Dodge Kansas and Fort Lyon Colo. Was in Denver in 1859 when the town concited of a few log cabins and its people had no dream of future greatnes, He lived in Florence 20, years and has been a resident of Canyon City, Colo. since 1914, is member of the Greenwood post no. 10, G,A,R He had a stroke while lighting his pipe, While standing up
