THE AUTHEMENT FAMILY GENEALOGICAL PAGE
AUTHEMENT WORLD
This site is dedicated to all ya'll out there who are related to the Authement Family. It is my hope to have all of us to have a family reunion before the year 2001. It is also my hope to have an Authement family biography published by that time with your help and the help of God. Don't forget to sign my guestbook at the bottom of the page.
The Authement or in France Autheman family came from Martigues, Bouche-du-Rhone, Provence, France which is on the coast of the Mediterenean Sea near Marseille. There are still Autheman family members in this part of France.
Most if not all the Authements in Louisiana are descendents of Jean Nicolas Authement and Catherine Mille. There is a Federic Authement who appears in Manchac in 1786 and is listed as sgt. in the permanant LA. regiment in a 1790 court case in New Orleans. Nothing is known of him yet other than this.
Nicolas was born Dec. 6 1736. He married Catherine Mille 9 June 1767 and he died in Martigues 13 Jan. 1823. He was the son of Andre' Autheman and Josephe Toussainte Lieutaud. Andre' was born 29 Nov. 1702. He was the son of Paul Autheman and Jeanne Colombet. Paul and Jeanne were married in quarter of Ferrieres 13 Aug. 1690. Paul was the son of Etienne Autheman and Marthe Ardoin. Paul died in Martigues 11 March 1721. Etienne moved to Martigues about 1670. He was the city attorney. The Autheman I am told were from the villages of Pelissanne and Grans(Bouche du Rhone dept.) and l'Isle sur Sorgue(dept. Vaucluse)
The first known Authement on the scene is Joseph Gaspard Authement. In the New Orleans Archdiocese records he is said to have a wife named Marie Francoise from Guinea and he has the following children: Joseph, Augusto Renato, Luis, Pierre, and Magdalena all born between 1805 and 1817. Joseph G. dies May 27 1833. His brother Pierre is his executor. None of his children are listed in his succession.
Pierre is also listed as a witness to the of another brother Victorieaux. Victorieaux died in New Orleans Oct. 29 1920.
The two most well known Authement brothers from whom most of us are descended are Jerome and Joseph Authement. They appear in Louisiana in 1818, both of them getting married.
Jerome marries twice. First to Marie Adele Saunier, daughter of Edward Saunier and Denise Arceneaux in 1818. After her , Jerome marries Marie Phobst/Faube in 1823.
Jerome has the following children from Adele Saunier: Antoine-Gassin aka Jerome Jr., Gaspard and Genese. Antoine and Genese were twins. They and Gaspard were all born in New Orleans. By His wife Marie Faube he has the following children: Louis Adam, Celina Kelle, Genevieve, Jean Antoine, Silvere and Dorsin Thomas all born between 1818 and 1835.
Joseph married Marie Angelique Liret daughter of Jean Pierre Liret and Magdaleine de Lambour Durambourg in 1818. Joseph died Aug. 8 1833 the same year as his brother Joseph Gaspard. They had the following children: Josephine, Lalie, Joseph Auguste and Marie Azeline. Joseph Auguste carries on Joseph's line by marrying Adeline Forest/Foret in 1844. He has the following children: Eva Eulalia who marries Oscar A. (one of Silvere's children), Augustine, Marie Emelia, Joseph Auguste, Rosa Angelique, Appolinaire, Andre Elric, Trasimond, Octave Raphael, Pierre Augustave, Paul Philocle, Theophile Aurestile, Emile Joseph, and Myrtile Henry. They were born between 1844 and 1873.
The Authement brothers seem to have gone from New Orleans, up the Mississippi to St. James and Ascension Parishes then moved down Bayou Lafouche to Lafouche and Terrebonne parishes. There they flourished and multiplied. Although, they themselves were not of Acadian descent, most of their wives were and so their children became part of the famille Acadian.
If you would like to contribute to this website you can contact me atrevhardheaded@geocities.com. I would love to have more Authement family stories and family trees to add to my book. I am also looking for family pictures to add to the book. Your contributions need not only be persons with the last name of Authement but they should be persons who you are descended from who married into the Authement family as is the case when Authement women married non-Authement men or the family trees of those women who married Authement men.
For those who are anxiously waiting for the book to be coming out, I ask your patience. I'm still entering all the information that has be submitted into my genealogy program.
