Ray & Mom (aka: Raynmom) - Ray has autism & hyperlexia and he's a musical savant. He likes to spend his time writing music & playing his keyboard, recording with his tape player & watching videos. His favorite TV shows are MASH & People's Court. His favorite movie is Turner & Hooch. He has limited expressive language, however, his receptive language is better (in comparison) and he's still improving in small ways. He also uses some sign language to communicate. He is 20 years old, lives at home and has been home-schooled most of his life. Please visit RaynMom2's Personal Home Page to learn more about us! raynmom@geocities.com

IceRef - This is Mike. Mike's 12 years old and is Autistic Impaired. He is non-verbal and has many challenging behavioral problems. He loves pizza, videos and his music. If he could communicate I'm sure his Quote would be: "Who's got the behavioral problem here, me or the society I live in?" We are always open for advice on Autism. (Both giving and receiving) IceRefjm1@aol.com

Susan & Tony live in New York. Susan wrote Song of Light about her son Tony, who is now 27 years old. "...Tony's "song of light" is a unique and invaluable gift to the world. Those who possess the wisdom to learn from this child receive gifts of lasting insight into what is fundamental, joyful, beautiful and truly important." slgengerke@aol.com

Glenn Vatter - Glenn and Dottie Vatter live near Syracuse, NY. Their son, Billy, is now 17 years old and has Down syndrome and autism. Glenn has written a book about the family experience with Billy and has established a worldwide parent support group and information center for the dual diagnosis. Glendot@worldnet.att.net

My name is Nora and my son's name is Zack. Zack is 12 years old and has autism & ADHD and lots of obsessive compulsive tendencies. I am a single mother, married twice. I am the director of Have A Heart Farm. We are a non-profit organization serving special needs children and their families with a variety of services including respite and siblings programs. I am also a full time college student studying Communicative Disorders. Zack is in the 7th grade in a special education environment. I would love to talk with other single mothers who are "making it". nreid@spacestar.net

Vicente & Teresa Marrero - Our son is 19 years old, his name is Vincent. We have had a recent crisis (violent episode). What we thought could wait is now an emergency, we need to place Vincent in a residential facility. We are happy to have found your site and hope that it can be of help to us and others. My Email is: vimarco@aol.com

Tim & Doris from Oklahoma, 3 children, ages 6-10. Matt age 9 is our "child with autism" (pc) nonverbal and very active.

Happy to find this list! I'm Carol and my husband Dennis and I have 3 sons. We live in NYS. It is our youngest who has autism/retardation. He is 35 years old. Lives in an ICF about a 12 minute drive from our home. He's been living there since 1990. We have him home every weekend and all holidays. Mostly, we are quite satisfied with his living arrangements. Frequent staff turnover but I realize this is the norm and a few have been there since day one. He seems to be ok about returning there and also seems to like most of the staff. He is non-verbal. I don't do chat rooms, so you won't see me there. Hope that is OK. My e-mail address is Carol-Dennis@worldnet.att.net I look forward to reading the list.

Tyler & Pam from Indianapolis - Tyler is 9 years old & has high functioning autism. He's my treasure & I don't even want to remember life before he was born. When Tyler was born it was a difficult birth and he had to be in ICU for five days. He was big...11 pounds 2 ounces and he was my first pregnancy at the age of 42. When Tyler was two there was much chaos in our family life, so I didn't really know something was wrong. I'm a single mom with few supports so I've had to face the diagnosis of autism alone. My challenge is to make Tyler's life as peaceful and productive as possible. In the fourth grade he gets his share of teasing and he has never had a friend (doesn't really know what to do with them). One Mom's Concept of an Autism Community tells about my idea of a community for autistic people and their families.

Pete - We are just starting to consider what we will do when our son reaches adulthood. It is still a long way away. I will probably just check up on your site now and then to see what is going on.

Kim - 2 children, ages 16-18+. My son is 21 and high functioning and attends a junior college. I wish someone, would create a "sheltered" college program, where tutors, mentors, housing, and therapists were available.

Sharon & Ted - My name is Sharon. I have two children, a daughter 8 years old and a son, Ted almost 11. Ted was diaganosed about a year ago with Asperger's. We have had a hard time finding outside activities for him. He is a darling boy, cute and very smart, but he is the brunt of much bullying at school. We do go to a Social Skills class when we can get into it (it's very popular) and that seems to help. But, the remainder of the time, Ted is often teased by other kids due to his "odd" behavior. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated! Thanks!

Pat Ryan - I live in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. My son, Sean, is 15 years old. He has autism and hyperlexia. He began to read at about 15 months old. His twin sister is gifted and devoted to him. Sean likes to watch movies (he loves closed captioning) since he gets so much more from the dialogue. His receptive processing is a little weak but his visual processing seems to more than make up for it. He likes to read the newspaper, ride his bike, play cards and ride horses. He loves movie trivia games and beats us all - his memory is amazing. He is funny, warm and loving. His favorite movie is Rainman -- especially the Casino scene.

My name is Kathy Lissner-Grant. I live and work in Denver, CO. I have Asperger's Syndrome and work part-time in a group home for teenagers with developmental disabilities. At home, I live with my Himalayan cat, Aziz, and my parakeet, Dhahran. The things I am interested in are: flags, countries, cats, maps, mass transit systems, Star Trek, Babylon 5, icons, things in foreign languages, and mountains. I live near the mountains and love it! I also have 202 flags in my collection and hope to get more when the new year starts. I have maps of Africa, Europe, Russia, the Middle East, USA, Canada, South America and lots more! I have things in over 20 different languages! The languages I have the most things in are: Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and Greek. I hope to get things in some African languages like Swahili. I used to have stuff in Afrikaans, but somehow it got thrown away. Also, I am a Denver Bronco fan. So if there are any cheeseheads out there, the only thing I can say, is that you guys won the Super Bowl in '97.

Pat Lindsey - I have three children--son age 19 away at college, son age 16 (with autism), daughter age 10. We moved to Tennessee less than a year ago because of a job transfer, from Texas where we had lived all of our lives. It has been somewhat of a culture shock, realizing that UT has an entirely different meaning in Tennessee!

David Rudzin - I live in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and have an 11 yr.old autustic son, along with his two "regular" 13 yr. old brothers. We fought our battles with the public school until 3 yrs. ago when we got our son into a private school, within a 20 minute ride of our home. It was quite a battle, and we had to prove the public school wasn't and couldn't give him the proper education. WE WERE RELENTLESS, and it paid off. Our son has thrived at this school, and has developed some social skills. He is quite a lovable "Big" boy and is very people oriented. He learns everything from watching and picks things up quickly. He goes to therapy privately and is using computers at school. I would appreciate any and all information and would be willing to share any experiences.

Hi, my name is Sunday, my 3 1/2 yr old son, Chris, was diagnosised with Autism this past summer. He is verbal at times and loves numbers and letters, and the computer!!!! I also have a 7 yr old daughter. We live in KY and I am learning a lot about Autism. Chris is in a pre-school setting through the local school system, it's a regular pre-school class but he seems to be doing well. He loves the teletubbies and Pooh. We are working on potty training right now. Would love to hear from others.

Virginia from New Mexico, a son, age 30, hearing impaired & autistic. Hello, everyone! I'm so glad I found this site, as I was becoming discouraged in my efforts to find others who are also the parents of adults with autism. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you. Our son is 30 years old and has always lived with his natural family. He has medical diagnoses of autism, developmental disabilities, undiagnosed neurological problems including mixed-seizure disorder, and has recently become deaf after previously enjoying normal hearing. He has always been nonverbal and also has hypothyroidism which is difficult to control, as well as diabetes insipidus and recently discovered abnormalities with IgA and IgG. Our area of the country certainly lacks any living arrangements that would be able to meet our son's needs. We are also discouraged by the continuing lack of knowledge we've encountered over the years regarding autism and related behaviors and needs.

Patti from California, 2 kids - a daughter, age 18, and a son, Dan, who was diagnosed with autism & hyperlexia. Our 21 year old son Daniel is living in a great group home not more than 20 minutes from where we live. Had problems with reflux as an infant. Mild CP/Autism. Learned to read early in life (2), used sign language until he was about 6 or 7. At about the same time he also learned to walk without the aid of a walker or quad cane. He has made great leaps forward. And a few back at times. He loves books, music, is very interested in dinosaurs (and most things that are really old ~ the pyramids, Petra the ancient city of stone is one of his latest interests) in the "vast universe and all that is beyond." He is verbal and can be very passionate. Some might say flat out stubborn. When asked what he would like to do (goals for the future) he says that he would like to retire this year. LOL Thats my guy... :-)
