Johann Yost Cope

Johann Yost (or Jost) Cope was born in 1700 in Wittenberge, Prussian Saxony, Germany (where Martin Luther went to University). He married Dorothea Barbara Beuscher [Bucher] in Germany. He died previous to 4 June 1762 Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pa. He is buried at Leidy Cemetery. Dorothea was born in 1700 in Prussia, died 6 Oct 1784 Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pa. She is buried at Leidy Cemetery. Johann Yost Cope and Dorothea (Bucher) Cope had these childen-Johann Nicholas born 1717, Catherine born 1729, Johann Adam born 173l, Johann Abraham born 1734, John George born 1737, and Phillip Jacob born 1740.

(1) Johann Yost Cope and Dorothea (Bucher) Cope's son Johann Nicholas Cope born 1727 (story is he was born on high seas). He married Catherine Gobel. He died 18 Aug 1785 Cooleemee Plantation, Davie Co. NC. Johann Yost and Catherine (Gobel) Cope had these children-Elizabetha Cope born 2 Aug 1751 Montgomery Co., Pa. (twin) to Georg Philip Cope born 2 Aug 1751 Montgomery Co.,Pa. married Catherine, died 10 Jan 1835 in NC, Johann Fridrich (Frederick) Cope born 18 Apr 1754 Montgomery Co., Pa. married Elizabeth, died pre-1820, Dority Cope (Dorothy) married Bostian, Catherine Cope married Andrew Bostian, Yost Cope married Mary Bowen. (she died a short time later) died pre-Sept. 1785 Rowan, NC.

Yost Cope and Mary (Bowen) Cope had these children-Johann "John" Christopher Cope, Johann Jost Cope II, and Jacob Andrew Cope.

Yost Cope and Mary (Bowen) Cope's son Johann "John" Christopher Cope was born about 1770 (Some information says he may have been born in 1777 or 1778), Rowan Co., North Carolina, and he died February 25, 1852 at age 83 in Jersey Co., Illinois. His father Jost Cope was born about 1752, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, died 10 February 1785, Rowan Co., North Carolina and his mother Mary (Bowen) Cope died pre-Sept. 1785 Rowan, NC. Johann "John" Christopher Cope had two brothers, Johann Jost Cope II, and Jacob Andrew Cope. Notes for JOHN C. COPE are: "John Cope orphan of Yost Cope, being 12 1/2 years old, is bound to Jacob Bostain till 21 years of age to learn the Shoemaker trade Master to comply with the Law".

Margaret Marjorie Bostian, was born about 1778, (Some information says her birthdate may have been 1771, other information says she may have been born later, about 1788). She died in 1852 in Jersey County, IL. She married Johann "John" Christopher Cope on 8 May 1804, Rowan Co., Northern Carolina. Her parents were Matthew Bostian, born about 1757, Rowan Co., North Carolina, died 3 May 1847, Alexander, North Carolina and Catherine Cope, born about 1750, Franconia Twp., Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, died about 1844, Alexander, North Carolina. (Some information says her parents may have been Jacob and Catherine (Cope) Bostian)

The Copes came from N.C. John was born about 1770 in Rowan Co. NC and married on 3 May 1804. They came to Jerseyville, IL about 1828. Margaret Bostian was born about 1778 to Mathias "Matthew" Bostian who moved to NC from PA shortly thereafter. John's father was Yost Cope. Before that was Johann Nicholas Cope and Anna Catherine Gobel. The first generation was Jost Cope or Yost Cope (Kob), the father of Johann Nicholas Cope. Yost was born in Germany and came to Philadelphia in 1727 from Wurtenburg Germany on the a ship named Adventurer. He's on the ship's passenger list as Joost Coope.

John Cope was born 1770 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died February 25, 1852 at age 83 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. He is buried at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. John Cope's wife Margaret "Marjorie" Bostian was born in 1778 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died 1852 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. John and Margaret married May 3, 1804. She is buried at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. There is no longer a tombstone posted for John Cope and his wife Margaret, thanks to vandals. A few years ago, Jersey County put up a memorial with those names of the people buried in the vandalized cemetery. John and Margaret are both listed on this memorial. John and Marjorie Bostian Cope were early settlers in what is now Jersey County, and both were buried in the old City Cemetery. They had sixteen children, some born in Rowan County, North Carolina and some in Jersey County.

(1) John and Margaret "Marjorie" (Bostian) Cope's son Joseph Cope was born in 1816, and died March 9, 1874. Joseph married first Martha Patsy Bullard, born March 15, 1823, and died June 28, 1862. They were married July 16, 1840. Joseph married second Melvina Warner after 1862.

Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope had these children-Edman Cope, Thomas Cope, John Cope, Mary Cope, Lucinda Cope, Emeline Cope, Joseph Cope, Caroline Cope, Adeline Cope, and Lavena Cope. Joseph and Melvina "Amanda" (Warner) Cope had these children-Amanda Cope and Jacob Cope.

(1a) Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope's son Edman Cope was born in Jersey county, Ill. on the 25th day of Nov. 1846. His parents were Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope, his father being a native of Ohio, his mother a native of Kentucky. Joseph died on the 9th day of March 1874, Martha died on the 28th day of June 1862. Edman was raised on a farm and the first place he located was on the old Patterson farm. In 1873 he came to Richwoods township and located on section 36, where he has since resided. On the 29th of May 1876 he was married to Sarah Ward, daughter of Moses and Nancy (Eaton) Ward. A family of five children have been born to them: Arwilda, Gracie, Martha, Jerry and Mardie.

Edman Cope died in 1944. He is buried in Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope had these children-Jerry Cope, Arwilda Cope, Grace Cope, Martha Cope, Mardie Cope, and Ward Cope.

(1aa) Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope's son Jerry Cope was born in 1880 in Jersey County, IL, and died in 1973. He is buried in Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Gussie Gunterman 10-7-1908 in Jersey Count, IL. Jerry Cope's wife - Gussie (Gunterman) Cope, died 08-03-1971. Final rites for Mrs. Gussie Cope, 84, of Jerseyville were held Friday, August 6, at 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation hours began after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. Her death occurred August 3 at Garnet's Chateau where she had resided for four years. Rev. W. C. Ward officiated at the services and interment was in Fieldon Cemetery. She was born October 8, 1886 at Fieldon, the daughter of Franklin and Emma Bethel Gunterman.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Cope; two sons, Virgil and Robert J. Cope of Jerseyville; three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Thelma) Leidner of Greenville, Mrs. Everett (Rosemary) Bain of Bellville and Mrs. Martin (Alberta) Golob of Alton; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert Gunterman of Otterville and Rodney Gunterman of Hardin; and a sister, Mrs. Rachael McKinney of Jerseyville. Her parents, one son and one daughter preceded her in death.

(1aaa) Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope's son - Robert J. Cope, died ??-09-1985. Robert J. Cope, 66, died at 10 a.m. Monday at his residence. He was born in Fieldon, son of the late Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope. The World War II veteran was a business agent for Jerseyville Local 646. Survivors include two grandchildren; and three sisters, Alberta Golob of Godfrey, Rosemary Bain of Bellville and Thelma Leidner of Greenville. Visitation was from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services were conducted at 11 a.m Thursday with the Rev. James Pepper officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

(2aaa) Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope's son - Virgil Cope, died 01-31-1981. Services for Virgil Cope, 70, of 910 W. Exchange, Jerseyville were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady Baskin officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. He died at 12:40 p.m. Jan. 31 at his residence. He was born in Fieldon July 25, 1911, a son of the late Jerry and Gussie Gunterman Cope and was retired as a laborer out of Local 646 after 42 years service. He is survived by one brother, Robert J. Cope of Jerseyville; three sisters, Alberta Golob of Godfrey; Rosemary Bain of Belleville and Thelma Leidner of Mulberry Grove. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Funeral Home. The Heart Fund has been named as a memorial.

(3aaa) Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope's daughter - Alberta (Cope) Golob, 80, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. She was born May 16, 1924, in Fieldon, Ill., to Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope. She married Martin Golob on Feb. 26, 1970, in Alton. He died Aug. 28, 1994. She worked in the X-ray department at Jersey Community Hospital for many years.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Ernest and Brenda McDonald of Symsonia, Ky., and Robert and Barbara McDonald of Jerseyville; a stepdaughter, Peggy Hunter of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Robert and Kevin McDonald, Tammy Lehr and Kelly Jo McDonald Hillis; six great-grandchildren, Sean, Ryan and Megan McDonald and Brittney, Brett and Brianna Lehr; and a sister-in-law, Betty Goldasich of Granite City.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Russell, Virgil and Robert Cope; and three sisters, Rosemary Bain, Thelma Leider and Faye Woolsey. Visitation was from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, where services were held at noon Monday. The Rev. Rick Patrick officiated. Burial was at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Fay Woolsey, 53 years, 8 months, 23 days, died July l6, at Normandy Osteopathic hospital, St. Louis County, where she had been a patient for 4 days. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Earl Clagg, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She was a daughter of Jerry & Gussie (Gunterman) Cope, Jerseyville and was born in Jersey County, October 23, 1913. Surviving is are her husband, Lester W Woolsey; her parents; 2 sons, Rodney W Woolsey, S Roxana, and Arbie D Woolsey, Redlands, CA; 2 daughters, Mrs Norman Backues, and Mrs Dale Stanley, Bethalto; 10 grandchildren; 2 bros, Virgil and Robert Cope, Jerseyville; and 3 sisters, Mrs Thelma Leidner, Greenville, Mrs Everett Bain, Belleville, and Mrs Alberta Fox, Jerseyville. One brother, Russell Cope preceded her in death.

Funeral- Funeral service 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2003 at Kurrus Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Stewart officiating. Burial Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, IL.

(2aa) Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope's daughter Arwilda Cope was born in Jersey County, IL. She married Elzy Pickerel 8-18-1893 in Jersey County, IL.

(1aaa) Elzy and Arwilda (Cope) Pickerel's son - Herschel E. Pickerel, died, 21 February 1959: Funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, 24 February at the Gubser Funeral Home for Herschel E. Pickerel of Jerseyville whose death occurred at eight-thirty o'clock Saturday evening, 21 February at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks. He had been in failing health for a number of years.

Services were held by Rev. Melvin McClain and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Pickerel was born in Jersey County, 26 June 1915, a son of Mrs. Wilda Cope Pickerel of Jerseyville and the late Elzy Pickerel. His age at the time of death was forty-three years, seven months and twenty-five days. Surviving him in addition to his mother are two brothers, George and Clarence Pickerel of Jerseyville and two sisters, Mrs. Earl Lewis of Chicago and Mrs. J. A. Owsley of Sweet Springs, Missouri.

(2aaa) Elzy and Arwilda (Cope) Pickerel's son - George W. Pickerel, died April 16, 1979: George W. Pickerel, 82, of 601 E. Pearl, Jerseyville, died at 8 am 16 April at Blu Fountain Manor in Godfrey. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2 pm 18 April by the Rev. James Boyer. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Born 20 May, 1896 in Jersey County, he was the son of Elzy and Wilda Cope Pickerel.

Pickerel was a retired service station attendant, Shell station. His survivors are his wife, Mary Ethel Lorain Pickerel whom he married in 1916; three sons, George of Wood River, Floyd, Glendale, Ariz. And Darrel, Belleville; one daughter, Helen Stamps of Godfrey; 10 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren. His parents, four brothers, three sisters preceded him in death. The Community Christian church has been designated as a memorial.

(3aaa) Elzy and Arwilda (Cope) Pickerel's son - Clarence Edmon Pickerel, died 5 April 1979: The funeral of Clarence Edmon Pickerel, 70, of 704 E. Pearl, Jerseyville was conducted Thursday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Noah Clay officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 4:45 pm 2 April at Jersey Community Hospital. Pickerel was a retired meat cutter from Hansen Packing Co. Born 26 October 1908 in Jersey County, he was a son of Elzy and Wilda Cope, Sr.

His survivors are his wife, Bonnie Wade Pickerel; three Sons, Kenneth, Fort Madison, Iowa, Frederick, Albuquerque, NM and Ralph of Jerseyville; one daughter, Diana Landon of Fenton, Missouri; one brother, George Pickerel of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren. His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The First Baptist church has been named as the memorial.

(3aa) Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope's daughter Grace (Cope) Prough's husband - George A. Prough, died 08-18-1952. Sep. 1952: George A. Prough, 78, a former resident of Jersey County, died 18 August at his home in Wellston, Okla. Mr. Prough was a son of the late Andrew and Hannah Watts Prough and was born in Kane. He resided in the Panhandle vicinity where he engaged in farming until 1901 when he moved to Wellston. He continued his farming operations near Wellston until a few years ago when he retired and moved from the farm to Wellston.

Mr. Prough was married to the former Miss Grace Cope of Jerseyville who survives him. He also leaves two daughters, and a son, all of Wellston, and a brother, Harry Prough of the Panhandle vicinity. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Wellston and burial was in the Wellston cemetery. Harry Prough of Kane and Ward Cope and sons, Ivan and Troy, of Nutwood went to Wellston to attend the funeral rites. Mr. Cope is a brother to Mrs. George Prough.

(4aa) Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope's son Ward Cope was born in Jersey County, IL. He married Ella Minesinger 2-17-1907 in Jersey County, IL. Ward and Ella (Minesinger) Cope had these children-Troy Cope, Ivan Cope, Everett Cope, Vernon Cope born 3-4-1908, died 3-16-1921, buried Fieldon, Cemetery Erma Cope, Edna Cope, Theresa Cope born 1-28-1921, died 4-10-1921, buried Fieldon Cemetery, and Mary Bell Cope.

(1aaa) Ward and Ella (Minesinger) Cope's son - Troy Cope, died 12-11-1968. Services for Troy Cope, 46 year old Fieldon resident, were held Saturday afternoon at half past one o'clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Todd of Moro officiating. Interment was in the Fieldon Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cope, a machine adjuster at Olin Mathieson in East Alton, died December 11 at Eunice Smith Home in Alton where he had resided for ten days. He was a son of Ward Cope and the late Mrs. Ella Meinsinger Cope and was born in Jersey County August 24, 1922.

Surviving him in addition to his father are three sisters, Mrs. Wilbur Wisnasky of Ocean Springs, Miss., Mrs. James Weaver and Mrs. Mary Bell Seehausen of Fieldon, two brothers, Ivan Cope of Cottage Hills. His mother, one sister, Theresa, and one brother, Vernon, preceded him in death.

(2aaa) Ward and Ella (Minesinger) Cope's son - Ivan Cope, died 09-16-1985. Ivan Cope, 61, of Fieldon, died Sept. 16 in Blu-Fountain Manor in Godfrey. He was born July 6, 1924, in Fieldon to the late Ward Cope and Ella Minesinger. He was a crane operator for 35 years at Laclede Steel. He retired in 1978.

Survivors include brother Everett Cornell Cope of Alton and sisters Erma Wisnasky of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Edna Weaver of Fieldon. Visitation was Sept. 18, and the funeral was Sept. 19 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Jean Erb officiating. Burial was in the Fieldon Cemetery.

(2a) Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope's son - Thomas L. Cope was born in Jersey county, Illinois, May 8, 1841, and departed this life April 12, 1923, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 4 days. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Baker, Sept. 5, 1873, who preceded him some six years ago.

To this union were born 5 children: Martha, W.S., Loren, Sam and Jess, all of whom survive. All were present at the funeral except Martha, who was sick. Besides his five children he leaves 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild to mourn their loss. He had lived near June for 50 years and will be missed in the community although he was in bed for the last year. The funeral was conducted at Harns Chapel by Rev. M. F. Showalter after which the body was laid to rest in the Hale cemetery.

Thomas Cope's wife - Mary J. (Baker) Cope, daughter of William J. and Sarah J. Baker, was born Sept. 30, 1848, and died Nov. 19, 1915, aged 72 years 1 month and 19 days. March 30, 1873, she was married to Thomas Cope who survives her with their five children, one daughter, Mrs. Merritt Smith, and four sons, W. S. Cope of McElhany, Loren, Sam and Jesse near home; also 13 grand children, this being the first death in the family circle.

She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. David Dawson of Selden, Kansas and Mrs. Lizzie Samples of Weir, Kansas, who were with her to the end; one brother,, Martin Baker of Alexander, Illinois. Her parents one sister and three brothers passed away several years ago. The funteral was held from her late home Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. Showalter and burial was made in the Hale cemetery. The pall bearers were Messrs. Dyes, Williams, Bond, Fields, Cope and Stader.

(7a) Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope's son Joseph Cope was born in 12-9-1854 in Jersey County, IL. He died 12-20-1940. He is buried at Gimes-Neely Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Elizabeth Rachel Sweeney 11-11-1875 in Jersey County, IL. She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Neely) Sweeney. She was born 2-16-1854 and died 2-11-1923. She is buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery. Joseph and Elizabeth Rachel (Sweeney) Cope had these children-Harry Allen Cope, Era J. Cope, Martha May Cope, Ruby Cope, and Jesse Cope.

(1aa) Joseph and Elizabeth Rachel (Sweeney) Cope's son Harry Allen Cope born 4-25-1878 in Jersey County, IL. He died 6-2-1963. He is buried at Grimes-Neely Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Effie M. Bond the daughter of Samuel Anderson and Mary M. (Milton) Bond. She was 11-26-1874 and died 9-30-1955. She is buried at Grimes-Neely Cemetery.

(2aa) Joseph and Elizabeth Rachel (Sweeney) Cope's son Era J. Cope was born in 1882 in Jersey County, IL, and died 1950. He is buried at Grimes-Neely Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Catherine Maple 5-24-1904 in Jersey County, IL. She was born in 1988 and died in 1977. She is buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery. Era and Catherine (Maple) Cope had a son - Pearl J. (Cappy) Cope, died 03-24-1973. Funeral rites for Pearl J. (Cappy) Cope of RR 3 Jerseyville were held Monday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. His death occurred at 1:35 a.m. on March 24 at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in Grimes Cemetery. Born July 3, 1906 in Jersey County he was the son of E. J. and Catherine Maple Cope.

A farmer, Mr. Cope was a member of the United Church of Christ in Fieldon, Fieldon Masonic Lodge and a longtime member of Farm Bureau. His survivors are his wife, Nina M. Johnson Cope; one son, Herbert Cope of Jerseyville; two grandchildren and a great grandchild; and his mother, Mrs. Catherine Cope of Hardin. His father and a brother preceded him in death. Masonic services were conducted at Jacoby Funeral Home Sunday evening. The Heart Fund has been designated as a memorial.

Pearl J. "Cappy" Cope's wife - Nina Mae (Johnson) Cope, died 02-08-1990. Nina Mae Cope, 84, died at 3:05 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 1990, at her residence. Before retiring, she was a schoolteacher in Jersey and Logan counties. Born in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Mary Ellen (Mossbarger) Johnson. She married Pearl J. Cope on Feb. 9, 1929, in Greene County, and he died on March 24, 1973.

Pearl J. (Cappy) and Nina Mae (Johnson) Cope's son - Herbert Lawrence Cope, died 12-13-1982. Herbert Lawrence Cope, 53, of Route 3, died at 7 a.m. today at his residence, following a brief illness. Born in Jersey County, son of Nina Mae (Johnson) Cope of Jerseyville and the late Pearl J. Cope, he was a clerical worker for the Secretary of State in the Driver's License Station in Edwardsville. He married the former Dorothy East on April 5, 1953, in Fieldon.

Surviving are his wife and mother; a daughter, Rhonda Downey of Jerseyville; a son, Michael of Jerseyville; and four grandchildren. Funeral services for James (Pearl) Coombes, 83, formerly of Jerseyville, whose death occurred Friday at El Paso, Texas, were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Leonard Todd of Noro officiated at the rites and burial was in the Fieldon Cemetery. A retired farmer, he was born February 20,1887 at Fieldon, a son of James and Amanda Cope Coombes.

He is survived by two sons, James L. Coombes of Jerseyville and William D. Coombes of El Paso; one daughter, Mrs. Rose Darr of Phoenix, Ariz., nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Alvis Leonard Cope, 71 year old Grafton resident, died Thursday evening, August 3, at 6 o'clock at the Waters Nursing Home in Jerseyville where he had resided the past thirteen months. Rev. William Sipes conducted the final rites for Mr. Cope at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Visitation hours were hld at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cope was a son of the late Daniel and Mary Monk Cope and was born at Fieldon on October 31, 1895. A resident of Grafton for sixty years, Mr. Cope was a retired burner at Duncan Foundry in Alton. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Jersey County Barracks 1395.

He is survived by two daughters and six sons, Miss Josephine Cope and Russell O. Cope of Grafton, Mrs. Robert Richards of Brighton, Leonard A. Cope of Auburn, Wash., Claude E. Cope of Jerseyville, Robert H. Cope of Independence, Mo., Jerome S. Cope of Granite City, Seaman 3 Ralph D. Cope of the U. S. Navy at El Cajon, Calif. Mr. Cope is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother. Floyd Cope of Tacoma, Wash., and three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Smith of Grafton, Mrs. Effie Timpe of Jerseyville and Mrs. Inez Peland of Tracy, California.

(1aaa) Alvis and Ruby (Besaw) Cope's son - Claude E. Cope, 81, died at 9:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at his home. Born March 12, 1921, in Grafton, he was a son of Alvis and Ruby (Besaw) Cope. He married Annie Frank on March 21, 1943, at the Bethel Methodist Church in Dow. After serving with the C.C. Camp, he worked at Owens-Illinois Glass in Godfrey for 38 years. He enjoyed woodworking projects, camping, playing and being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A member of the Bethel Methodist Church in Dow, he enjoyed working in his yard and nurturing his many trees and flowering plants. He was also a member of Machinists Local 660.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter and two sons-in-law, Ruby and Tom Collins of Jerseyville and William Collins of Hardin; a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Susan Cope of Godfrey; seven grandchildren, Ruth, Kenneth, Claude Edward, Randall, Melissa, Daniel and Ryan; eight great-grandchildren, Lyndsi, Garrett, Jamie, Joseph, Miranda, Maggie Jean, Claude David and McKensie; a sister and brother-in-law, Zelis Jean and Robert Richards of Brighton; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Jerome Sidney Cope of Yuma, Ariz., Russell O. and Janet Cope of Grafton, Pat Cope of Salisbury, Md., and Betty Cope of Independence, Mo.

He was born Feb. 13, 1939, in Jerseyville to Edward and Gretchen (Waters) Collins. His marriage to Ruby Cope took place Feb. 8, 1969, at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville. He was a retired farmer, retired animal control officer in Jersey County and had retired as a bus driver with Jersey Community School District 100 after 28 years of service. He loved animals, especially Sarah, his buddy. He enjoyed socializing with everyone at Fran and Marilyn's Restaurant. He loved antiques and enjoyed displaying his 1930 Model A. He also enjoyed camping and the outdoors.

(1aaa) James William and Nora Belle (Green) Cope's son - Thomas Norman Cope, 73, died at 6:35 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 30, 1930, in Alton, one of 15 children of the late James and Nora (Green) Cope. He married LuCille A. Cope on Dec. 24, 1955, in Alton. She survives. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. He was a police officer with the city of Alton from 1956 until 1964. He retired from Brinks Armor Car in 1990 after 26 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the American Legion and will be remembered for the love he had for fishing and camping with his family.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mick and Debbie Cope of Bethalto and Scott and Lesa Cope of Godfrey; a daughter, Sandy Cope of Alton; five grandchldren, Kyle, Tanner, Michael and Zachary Cope and Heather Sebastian; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester and Hilda Cope of Woodburn and Charles and Esther Cope of East Alton; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Tommy Johnson of Canton, Mo.; and nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elias-Smith Funeral Homes and Crematory in Alton, where services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Leroy Smithl officiated. Born June 27, 1914, in Grafton, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Nora B. Green Cope. She was formerly employed at Alton Memorial Hospital as a dietitian. After her retirement, she did volunteer work for the Salvation Army. She was a former member of St. Kevin's Catholic Church. She married Samuel Taravella Nov. 27, 1948, in Alton. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are five daughters, Clara L. Miller, Virginia M. Davis, Dora L. Chunderlek, Jo-Anna Woods and Linda K. Hummel; one son, James D. Taravella; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; one sister, Jane Johnson; and three brothers, Lester, Charles and Tom Cope. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis T. Bryles, two sons, one daughter, three brothers and seven sisters. Burial was at Fieldon Cemetery. Fieldon United Church of Christ is the memorial.

His father, James Cope, was one of the early settlers of Jersey Co., coming here from North Carolina with his father about 1828. Settled on farm 2 miles west of Jerseyville. Milo is one of 11 children, none of whom are still living, 8 of whom reside in Jersey Co. Lenard, the eldest, is 72, Archibald, the youngest is 50 years. Milo grew to manhood on his father's farm and Jan. 31, 1879 married Mariam Faulkner. 6 children Lester, Sarah, Olive who died in infancy; Clark, who died at age 17, Jessie, wife of Henry Landon and Blanch at home. All reside in Otterville. His wife died Jan. 30, 1904.Milo Cope's wife - Mariam (Faulkner) Cope, died 1904. Mrs. Milo Cope died at home near Otterville Sat. evening aged about 45 years. Presbyterian church at Otterville. Leaves husband, two sons and three daughters.

(1aa) George and Alice Minerva (Cope) Vincent's son - John Henry Vinson, died 03-07-1975. John Henry Vinson, 86, a farmer who resided on Rural Route 1, Dow, died at 7 pm on March 7 at St. Joseph's hospital in Alton. Final services were held Monday afternoon, March 10, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with interment in Fieldon cemetery. The Rev. William Bohannon officiated. The family designated the heart fund as a memorial.

He was born December 15, 1888 in Jersey County, a son of George and Alice (Cope) Vinson. His wife the former Clara Engle, died in June of 1938. He is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Alice Plummer, Mrs. Clarence (Mildred) Auston and Mrs. Leonard (Reta) Wallice of Grafton and Mrs. Willard (Thelma) Marshall of Jerseyville; 7 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren; 2 g-g-grandchildren; and a brother Lloyd Vinson of Dow. His wife and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

(2aa) George and Alice Minerva (Cope) Vincent's son - Lloyd Vinson, died 01-13-1976. Lloyd Vinson, 84, died at 6:30 pm on January 13 at the Jerseyville care center where he had resided for 1 & 1/2 years. A farmer, he was born on December 12, 1891 in Illinois, a son of George and Alice (Cope) Vinson. His wife was the late Edith (Engel) Vinson.

His only survivors are nieces and nephews including Heather Rudolph and Rita Wallace of Rural Route 1 Grafton who are g-nieces. Final rites will be conducted at 1:30 pm on January 16 from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with Rev. John Sims of the Bethell Methodist church officiating. Interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Friends may call at Jacoby Funeral Home after 4 pm Thursday January 15, the American Cancer fund has been designated as a memorial.

(11a) James and Mahalia "Haley" (Whisman) Cope's son Archibald "Arch Cope was born in 1863 in Jersey County, IL. COPE. Died 13-05-1951. Mrs. Elizabeth L. Cope, eighty-four year old Jerseyville resident, died Sunday afternoon, May 13, at three-twenty o'clock at the Watson Nursing Home where she had resided the past six months. The decedent was a daughter of the late John L., and Mary J. Bently Lofton and was born at Girard, Kansas, On December 28, 1866. At the time of death she was aged eighty-four years, four months and fifteen days. Mrs. Cope was the widow of Arch Cope.

Surviving the aged woman are two daughters, Mrs. Charles Isringhausen of Kane and Mrs. Beulah Bowers of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Mary Crane of Los Angeles, California, and one brother, John T. Lofton of Los Angeles, California. She also leaves thirteen grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, may 16, at two o'clock at Jacoby Brothers' Funeral Home. Rev. Melvin McClain, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Married on March 14,1884 to Lillie Jeanette Dowdall. Leaves, wife and children, Albert Cope of Alton, Mrs. Edith White of St. Louis., Mrs. Ethel Fuller, Clinton Cope, Mrs. Violet Patton and Marie Cope. Nine grandchildren. Funeral from home by Rev. J. F. Glotfelty. Burial in IOOF Cemetery.

John Cope's wife - Lilly Jeanette (Dowdall) Cope, died 05-06-1928. Lilly Jeanette Dowdall Cope born at Grafton Dec. 20, 1863 died May 6. 65 years. Married John Cope of Jerseyville March 14, 1884. He preceded her. Six children; Albert J. Cope of Alton, Marie Cope, Edith White of St. Louis, Clinton Cope, Viola Patton, Ethyl Fuller all of whom survive. 12 grandchildren, 2 sisters Mrs. Thomas O'Neil of St. Louis and Mrs. John Tonkinson of Grafton, Edward Dowdall of Osage , MO. Presbyterian church. All of her life in Jersey Co.

(1aa) John A. and Lilly Jeanette (Dowdall) Cope's daughter - Mildred Marie (Cope) Maxwell, died 01-09-1982. The funeral of Mildred Marie Maxwell, 78 of La Marque, Texas was conducted Monday afternoon from Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. Leonard Todd. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. She died at 12:05 am on January 9 at St. Mary's hospital in Galveston, Texas After a lengthy illness. Mrs. Maxwell was a retired civil service worker from Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Born June 28, 1903 in Grafton, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Lily Jeanette Dowdall Cope. Her survivors are her husband, Harry Maxwell of La Marque; two sisters Edith Whyte of La Marque and Ethel Fuller of Alton; nieces and nephews. Her parents, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

(2aa) John A. and Lilly Jeanette (Dowdall) Cope's daughter - Viola (Cope) Patton, Mar 1947: Mrs. Viola Cope Patton, wife of Calvin Patton, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, March 23 at four-fifteen o'clock at her home at Grafton of cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Patton had been suffering from high blood pressure for some time. Sunday afternoon she expressed a desire for a bottle of soda and her son, Gilbert, had left the home to get the refreshment for his mother. During his absence Mrs. Patton called to a neighbor to have her daughter, Mrs. Lowell Skeens, to come to the Patton home. When Mrs. Skeens arrived she found her mother unconscious in a chair. A physician was summoned but death occurred within a short time.

Mrs. Patton was born on a farm near Jerseyville, nov. 22, 1889. She had resided at Grafton most of her life. Surviving Mrs. Patton in addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Skeens, are two sons, William Russell and Calvin Gilbert Patton of Grafton; one Brother Clinton Cope of Jerseyville and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Maxwell of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Edith White of Jerseyville and Mrs. Clifford Fuller of East Alton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 25, at the Grafton Methodist church and burial was in the American Legion cemetery at Grafton.

(3) John and Margaret "Marjorie" (Bostian) Cope's son Lewis (Lute) Cope was born March 7, 1821 in Greene County, Illinois. He died March 26, 1890 in Neosho, Missouri. Lewis Cope married Nancy Bullard, born March 1821 in Kentucky, and died in 1884. They married on November 21, 1844. Lewis (Lute) and Nancy (Bullard) Cope had these children-Nathan Cope, Andrew C. Cope, Elmira Cope, Catherine Cope, Arch Cope, Oliver Cope, John Cope, Marion Cope, Louis E. Cope, Ecornelia Cope, and Verlena Cope.

He married Julia Ann Henson 12-16-1875 in Jersey County, IL. She was born in 1852 and died 12-18-1940. She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. Nathan and Julia Ann (Henson) Cope had these children-Arch Cope, George Cope, Bertha Cope, Walter Cope, and Clyde Cope.
