Ringhausen, 60 years, 7 months, 7 days, prominent farmer and orchardist of Jerseyville, was gored to death by a registered gurernsey bull at his farm 2 miles east of Jerseyville Tuesday am, March 15. His body was found by one of his sons, Kenneth, who had gone to the barnlot to assist him with some work. The son related that his father left the house about 8 am Tuesday and he went out about 10:30 and saw his father lying on the ground in the lot about 100 yds from the house. He called to his mother to summon an ambulance. Upon investigating he found that his father was dead. The bull which was usually kept tied was in the lot. The animal was four and one-half years old and had been shown several times. Testifying at the inquest held Wednesday am by Coroner Rodney Jacoby, Kenneth stated he had worked the midnight shift at the Lincoln-Mercury plant and when he returned home he left a note for his mother to call him about 10:30 so that he could help his father with some of the farm work. Another son Hubert, who usually helps with the farm work had gone to MN to assist at a stock show. Kenneth testified that the bull was fairly tame. Ringhausen was born 20 Oct 1892 in Hardin , Calhoun County, IL, and died 09 Nov. 1969 in a St Louis Hospital. He married Ione Viola Hamilton 25 Feb. 1915 in Edwardsville, Madison County, IL, daughter of Joseph Hamilton and Barbara Grassmann. She was born 02 Nov. 1894 in Hardin, Calhoun Cty, IL, and died 19 Nov. 1989 in Flat Rock, Henderson County, NC. Her burial was 24 Nov. 1989, at Hardin Cemetery, Hardin, Calhoun Cty, IL. Harry W. Ringhausen's parents Christian and Christine (Schafer) Ringhausen gave each of their sons a farm when they were of age, and his farm was about 3 1/2 miles out of Hamburg, IL on the Kampville road. He lived at that farm a while growing apples, but then he sold that farm and and he and his family moved to Elsberry, MO and established another orchard on Hwy 79. Later he also owned and ran the Elsberry/Hamburg ferry, and took the mail. ----------------- Notes for Harry William Ringhausen: Notes "from Bob" state "Tennant on Mount Hope Fruit Farm (owner Chris Ringhausen. 1919, Sec. 29, Crater Precinct." From this I would read that the Hamburg farm was not owned by Harry, but by Chris, and that it was called the Mount Hope Fruit Farm. Since I was told that the father, Chris, gave each of the sons a farm, it may be that Harry and Viola farmed the Mount Hope Fruit Farm at first, and that later Chris gave him the Elsberry farm where he moved and built a home. I have the original plat of the Elsberry farm and orchard, and reportedly it was laid out for 10,000 fruit trees. Along the way, Harry built a 'packing shed' which was used for years but was eventually destroyed by a cyclone that hit the area. The house, which was on a part of the farm west of the orchard, was a two story frame home that burned down years later while no one was home. On the farm he also had a barn and a concrete silo. I don't recall the timing, but Harry also bought and ran the Hamburg Ferry across the Mississippi for a number of years, and in conjunction with the ferry he also carried mail. After the ferry was sold, Harry and Viola worked on a Standard Oil tug pushing barges up and down the Mississippi. Viola ran the kitchen, and Harry assisted her as well as having other duties. One of his most satisfying accomplishments was his Masonic work and his receiving his 33rd degree. This degree, I understand, requires the vote of one's fellow members, and Harry felt especially honored that his St. Louis co-masons would so honor a farmer from Elsberry. One of the most touching stories I know about Harry occurred at his funeral. At the funeral home the night before the burial, a man appeared that no one seemed to know. Either Dorothy of Viola decided that someone needed to find out who he was. When approached, the man said that he did not know any of the family, but that years before he had come to Harry for a job during the depression. PaPa told him that he was not hiring, but that if he would not be wasteful, he was welcome to pick all the fruit he wanted from the orchard and sell it for food to feed his family. We never learned any further details, but the man had fed his family this way for a while, and drove (I think from St. Louis) just to pay his respects at the funeral home. After the fire had destroyed the original house, Harry and Vi moved into town and lived in at least 4 different houses in Elsberry (I think there may have been a fifth). But they also rebuilt at the farm by tearing off the top of the toolhouse and remodelling it into a 5 room home with a basement. I am not sure why they moved from there into town to the last house, but I think I was told that the snowy witnters made the change necessary so they would not be out of town alone. Their final house, 2 doors north of one of the churches (I can't remember if it was Nazarere), was merely 2 1/2 blocks from the house I was born in in 1927. ----------------- Notes for Ione Viola Hamilton from her grandson Harry Edwards: (Obituary and biographic information) -- Viola was living with Dorothy, her daughter and Charles, Dorothy's husband, at Bonclarken, Flat Rock, Henderson County, NC at the time of her death and a number of years prior. The funeral service was at the Elsberry Missouri Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am, and services were conducted by Rev. Larry Doubet. Following the service, friends provided a meal in the basement of the church. Viola's six grandsons were the pall bearers and ate first, then left to accompany the hearse as others ate and followed shortly. The hearse crossed the Mississipp by ferry at Foley because the Elsberry Ferry was not in service at the time. At 2:00 pm all reconvened at the Hardin Il Presbyterian Church for a service there. Following theis service, burial was atop the hill across the street from the church, but due to it's height, the hearse and those attending went by car to the cemetery. Documentation of the above is mostlly in the Lincoln County Journal, p. 2, of Dec 5, 1989. I, however, am Harry Edwards, the oldest of the grandsons who was present and attended the casket. Her birth certificate lists her as the 5th child of this mother, but I have her listed as the 7th. We do not know if they were counting only living children and 2 had died (Frankie is one death of a sibling before Vi's birth and another infant died but I don't have dates), or whether our listing of ages for the other children is wrong, or why this difference. Since these were my mothers aunts and uncles, we have no doubt that all seven listed are correctly children of this union. Viola was educated in Hardin Il schools and had 1 yr of High School. She took and passed the teacher's exam in Calhoun County and Green County and received her certificate. She did teach for one year. Her certificate is not available because it was destroyed in the house fire at Elsberry. In the small town of Elsberry she was able to know everything that everyone was doing, and she would tell Harry the news when he was around. At least once, and probably more, he listened for a while then casually asked, 'Are we having a little nose trouble Vi?' ------------------- Children of Harry Ringhausen and Ione Hamilton are-Hamilton William Ringhausen, Dorothy Bess Ringhausen, Douglas Paul Ringhausen, Infant Daughter Ringhausen, and Shirley Anita Ringhausen. ------------------ (1a) Harry W. and Ione Viola (Hamilton) Ringhausen's son Hamilton William Ringhausen was born 31 Dec 1915 in Hamburg, Calhoun County, IL, and died 16 Jan 1995 in Las Vegas, Clark County, NV. His burial was at Palm Valley View Memorial Park, Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. He married 1st Dorothy Nelle Watts 01 Jan. 1940, daughter of Clarence Watts and Nell Daniel. She was born 29 Mar. 1920 in Troy, Lincoln County, Mo, and died 28 Oct. 1999. Her burial was at Eden Prairie Cemetery, Eden Prairie, Hennepin County, MN. He married 2nd Shirley (Beck) Trowl 22 Mar. 1978 in San Bernadino County, Grand Terrace, CA. Notes for Hamilton William Ringhausen: Everyone called him Ham or Hamilton, but when I began recording the genealogy, I found occasional instances of William Hamilton. When he performed on stage playing the piano and later the electric organ, he used the name 'Bill Hamilton.' When his name was given for articles, etc, some writers used Hamilton Willliam and others used William Hamilton. In part because of the stage name being in the William Hamilton order, I suspected for a while that this may be the correct order, and that the confusion may have begun because Pa Pa (his father) was H. W. Some may have suspected that Ham was a Jr. and used the Hamilton William order in error. After writing the above, I reviewed a genealogy sheet sent to Dorothy 'from Bob', and the name was listed in that genealogy as William Hamilton, but the Social Security Death Index had him listed on its records as Hamilton William.
