In 1729, he came from Medfield, having received a grant of land which was called West Medfield (also called Dumer and Douglas) which subsequently became Sturbridge.

The first town meeting was held in his house in 1746/1747/1748 when there were not enough qualified voters to fill the offices which was the reason for his brother, John Marsh, was elected as the town clerk despite of his not being a legal voter.

Joseph Marsh was one of the first four voters and the moderator of this meeting.

He was on the first board of selectmen

He was a leading citizen of the town for many years.

He was on the committee to erect the first meeting house.

Joseph married (1) Sarah Partridge, daughter of Nathaniel Partridge and Lydia Wight, on 24 Feb 1717 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. Sarah was born on 5 Jan 1697/1698 in Medfield, Norfolk, MA.

7. Deacon John Marsh (Joseph , John ) was born on 2 Aug 1696 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. He died on 25 Mar 1769 in Douglas, Worcester, MA.

He and his brother, Joseph Marsh, settled first in Medfield

He removed to Douglas and was elected as the first clerk of the town before he was a legal voter.

He was selectman of the town as well as town clerk in 1748-49 and other years.

In 1753, he was deacon of the church and had the custody of the keys, etc.

He died in his 73rd years.

His real estate was divided on 19 November 1770.

The papers were signed by Joseph and Ebenezer Marsh and by John Ballard, guardian for the grandchildren.

John married Martha Hartshorn, daughter of Joseph Hartshorn and Sarah, on 6 Oct 1719 in Dedham, Norfolk, MA (or Medfield, MA). Martha was born on 2/10 Jul 1700 in Dedham (or Reading), Norfolk, MA. She died on 14 Jan 1781 in Douglas (or Sturbridge), Worcester, MA.

She died in her 81st year.
