MEMORIES

mrben

I am sure that you might think, and you would be right, that my best memory has to do with my meeting and marrying my wife Syl, but I thought that I would give an earlier memory.

When I was 6 years old, a TV program came on the "air wavs" called "Star Trek". I was facinated by the idea of space and how people could travel to distant planets and see "aliens". For some "unknown" reason, my mother didn't like Star Trek and always said that it was my "bed time". I would make-up some excuse to stay up, or just "sneak" back into the room to watch it. In 1967 my "bed time" was changed to a later time, but sad to say, so was Star Trek. So once again I had to do the same thing. Finally my mom said that I could watch "that stupid show" and my life was happy!!!, and then out of nowhere......BOOM, they canceled the "Best Show" ever.

This would be a sad story, but somebody (unknown to me) finally came-out with a great thing called "Reruns", and once again my life was HAPPY!!!!! I saw very few of the original series when it came out, but I love it when I now see an episode that I saw as a young child staying up too late, or sneaking back just to see his favorite show.

That is probably the reason why TOS is my favorite also, and even though the "effects" might be better, it could never mean as much as the first time I saw a man that wasn't from our world, in a ship that could travel to strange and wonderful places.

Hopefully the "Dream" that Gene started in the early Sixties will inspire others to "Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before"!!!

Without a doubt, it has to be meeting, forming a friendship with, falling in love with, and marrying my best friend, Ben. That is just so obvious, but I decided that I would give you more than just that.

At the time that I began being a regular visitor to the lounge, my dad was real sick and shortly afterward passed away (a fact known to but a few "lizards"). I was also going through what all mothers do eventually in there lives..."Empty Nest Syndrome." My son was in Alabama for four months, my oldest daughter and I were estranged, my younger daughter lives with her dad, and my youngest son came home sporadically from a foster home.

The people in the lounge were friendly, humorous, and compassionate, which is why I return faithfully, in spite of recent difficulties. I have made so many good friends, among them are Catherine (araluen), Landru, Buntings3, Furgerson, MJ, MorganPhoenix, Leanna (Alissa), Hayden Rees Jones, Siobhan, Prophet319, Redwolf, daRog and daKath, Rabbit and Bunny, Tellah, Andy and Anthony, Andy Miller, The Borg (Tony), Guam, Bruddabob, Ben Park, Baksoy, CB, CD and Fred, Ajax, Adam(?), Danno, Elim Garak (Tom), Dr. Craig Lamb, Garry and Diane Chambers, GK, Herbie, Robin (JAGG55, no longer with us), Jun, Kenneth, Iggie, the other "Leanne", Paul, Lisa, Nicky, Ric & Jen (stiff competition for cutest couple...lol), RockD, Siobhan, Dom, Martin Hall, Simon and Brigette, r2ams, stifford, whulf, Guy Vardaman, and...who could forget, MARC WADE!!! Don't fret, nook, I hold you in VERY high regard. These are all the FRIENDS that I can think off of the top of my head, and if I have missed anyone, I AM TRULY SORRY!

The Lounge has to be my favorite Trek memory: for the friends that I have made, for the laughs that we have shared, the excitement over the release of First Contact (and the wedding of course...lol) and other trek events, the heartbreak when bad fortune befell a fellow lizard (mostly a comp that crashed and burned), the family atmosphere that permeates the Lounge that helped me when I felt as tho I had no family left. The lizards made me feel welcomed, and that is why I always try to make the "newbies" feel as though they want to return, too. I am always striving to make the lounge comfortable for everyone, even the "weirdos."

Hello Out There, Thanks for the invitation to be included in the Star Trek Year Book. I have been a virtual member of the Enterprise crew since the original series aired so it's difficult to have a single favorite moment. I have narrowed it down to:

the scene of Spock's death in the movie. There I was in a theater with every seat taken on a date with my husband to be and suddenly Spock was dying actually dying. I couldn't believe it. Didn't want to believe it, but..oh God it was true. I felt this huge lump in my throat. I tried to force it away. I told myself it was only a movie etc.. Nothing worked..I couldn't hold it back, it was my friend who was dying ..my long time friend. You could hear deep sobs , purses opening and closing as tissues were gotten out, masculine throat clearing sounds from all sides of the theater. In that theater were people of all ages, colors, and walks of life and we were completely as one because of Gene Roddenberry, Lenard Nemoy and Star Trek It took several days and an article in a movie gossip column about bringing Spock back from Genesis before I could begin to forgive the movie studio for even entertaining the thought.

JUST your WEDDING SYL AND BEN THAT TRULY WAS A FIRST FOR ME -Fred

Hmmmmm....favorite Trek memory, eh? That's a toughy. Most of the time I wasn't actually doing anything while watching Star Trek. Wait a minute...I've got one. 22 November, 1996 was a special day for me. It may not have been as special as Ben & Syl's, but to me, it was a special day. The premiere of First Contact was, quite simply put, one of the best days of my life. It was a nice, friendly outing with a girl I used to like named Amanda.

But... for a moment, I'd like to share a rather...strange Star Trek memory of mine. It deals with the Deep Space Nine episode "Crossfire." This particular ep of DS9 airs almost every time that I give up on a relationship. It happened after I gave up on Nicole (twice) and, most recently, when I discovered Jessica's false motives. (Don't you just love second-run syndicaiton?)

- that friendly bartender, Elim Garak (Smiles, Tom, etc.)

That's easy, I my greatest memory was actually an accident. I used to hate Trek, but I liked almost all other Sci-Fi, I couldn't seem to find anything good enough on the web to satisfy my views, I decided to go see this "Continuum" but was pretty sure I wouldn't like it, I followed into a chatroom and was completely bored, I had no idea of what they were talking about. Soon enough though, I went to the chat room when Robert Picardo and Ethan Phillips were in on a special chat, I had some questions answered, and thought these guys were alright. I soon caught the season premiere of Voyager, in which I didn't care much for, but soon enough I caught DS9's season premiere, which I thought was incredible, even though I barely knew what a Changeling was. That is how I started watching Trek.

let me think.... i think my favourite story, was a couple of months ago, when First Contact came out, we had camp and had already missed out on opening night, however, because we stayed up till 4 in the morning we were tired, and after a 3 hour trip back to our school we (my other trek friends) were litterally staggering out of the bus, so we went to the movie theatre, instead of going to sleep, it was all worth it, we would have done it just for the bit where the defiant and borg ship were fighting and the enterprise E came inbetween them.
