Records for four Gilbert gentlemen have been found in Baltimore County MD archives prior to 1700; they are John Gilbert, Thomas Gilbert Sr, Thomas Gilbert Jr and Garvis Gilbert, grandfather of Daniel Gilbert Jr. Following are excerpts concerning John, Thomas Sr, and Thomas Jr from Barnes, Baltimore County Families 1659-1759:

Thomas Gilbert was in Balto. Co. by 1692 as a taxable in Spesutia Hund.; had s. Thomas, Jr., who first appeared as a taxable in 1695 in Spesutia Hund. (138; 140). (Note: According to research by Marcum, Thomas Jr was not a son of Thomas Sr; the designation Sr=elder and the designation Jr=younger - not blood relatives). Following are excerpts from William H & Fonda Waters Marcum, The Way it Was with our Ancestors, (self-published), ©1982:
"It is a matter worth noting that the John Gilbert who also came to Baltimore County, Maryland in 1671 owned property called The Grove which consisted of 1000 acres. Property owned by Thomas Sr and Elizabeth (immigrants in 1671) adjoined this acreage, and appears to show some relationship to this John since Thomas Sr's heirs owned adjoining property as late as 1754. . . Thomas Gilbert (Jr) received a grant of land in 1695 called Gilbert's Adventure so he had established residence by that time. . .
"It is believed by many Gilbert researchers and concurred in by the writer that Thomas Gilbert (Jr) and his younger brother Garvais (as he spelled it in his will) arrived in the Province of Maryland circa 1693, since Thomas appeared on the Maryland Tax Rolls for Spesutia Hundred for the first time for the years 1694-1696. At this time Thomas (Jr) would have been 18-20 years old. The next Maryland Tax Roll which could be located is the list for 1699 and Jarvis Gilbard is shown with Thomas Gilbord, Jr. and another Thomas Gilbord, Sr (whose connection with our Gilbert family is unknown)."
