Hi there, I'm Pam Richardson. I have a great husband, Rod, and Beth is my stepdaughter who is a sophomore at Cornell College in Iowa. One of my hobbies is showing dogs. I currently have two Samoyeds, Solo and Angel.
We live on a "farmlette" of 10 acres near Kansas City and raise Clydesdale horses. Right now we have Sarah, 6 years old, and Victoria, who is 10. They had babies in May, 1998--Molly and Starbuck. We had another baby boy this year, born on Molly's birthday. His name is Jesse. Sarah and Starbuck are for sale!
I used to be a free-lance magazine journalist and photographer. I have a BSJ from the University of Kansas. My husband is an attorney. A really nice guy, not a stereotypical attorney.
In 1998 I founded The Binky Blankie Bank, Inc. It is a Kansas non-profit corporation and I quickly received tax exempt (501 c 3) status from the IRS (bless 'em). The purpose of the organization, so far, is to make baby and kid's quilts to give to children in distressed situations (for example, at the battered women's shelter). We had a big event on October 24 which was national Make A Difference Day 1998. On that day, we held sew-a-thons in 3 locations around Kansas City. Seventeen volunteers pieced and quilted baby quilts.
Then, on November 10, 1998 the Olathe Quilter's Guild helped out by holding another sewing event for us at their regular meeting! Thanks guys! About half the membership (54 women) turned out on a cold, windy evening to piece 14 tops, baste and quilt 22 tops, make 26 kits, and iron and cut countless yards of donated fabric. We also gratefully received donations of finished blankies from the members and ladies who came to Diff Day.
As a result of those donations alone, on Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, we delivered to Newhouse battered women's shelter 29 baby quilts, 10 blankets and two juvenile quilts. In April, 1999 we were able to provide Temporary Lodging for Children with 20 more blankies. We were the happy recipients of the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award in April, 1999 which came with a $500 donation and in October, 1999 we received another $500 donation from Wal-Mart.
On Make a Difference Day 1999 we held one sewing workshop, staffed primarily by volunteers from the Common Threads guild. As of this update, Jan. 1, 2000, we have nearly 40 quilts ready to go to their new owners.
People who do or are interested in quilting/sewing for charity should join us. |
