Notes:
NORTH KOREA HAS MADE STEADY PROGRESS ON ITS SURFACE-TO-SURFACE MISSILE CAPABILITY FOR MORE THAN A DECADE. SCUD MISSILES GIVE nK THE CAPABILITY TO TARGET THE ENTIRE REPUBLIC. WE KNOW THAT SINCE 1990 THE NORTH HAS BEEN WORKING ON A NEW MISSILE, THE “NO DONG” (RANGE APPROX 1000 KM). IN LATE 1992, WE OBTAINED NEW EVIDENCE THAT nK MAY BE WORKING ON AN EVEN LONGER RANGE SYSTEM CALLLED THE “TAEPO DONG ONE”, WITH AN ESTIMATED RANGE OF 1500 KM. THIS MISSILE COULD THREATEN ALL OF JAPAN BY THE END OF THIS DECADE. EVEN MORE RECENTLY, WE HAVE INDICATIONS THAT nK IS DEVELOPING AN EVEN LONGER RANGE MISSILE (TAEPO DONG 2), WHICH COULD GIVE nK THE CAPABILITY TO TARGET U.S. BASES IN GUAM AND POSSIBLY ALASKA.
THIS SLIDE DEPICTS NOMINAL RANGE ARCS FOR LONG RANGE nK MISSILE SYSTEMS. NONE OF THESE MISSILES ARE VERY ACCURATE AT THEIR LONGEST RANGES, RAISING THE POSSIBILITY THAT nK MAY CONSIDER THE USE OF CHEMICAL WARHEADS TO INCREASE THE WARTIME EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE SYSTEMS. nK SUCCESSFULLY TESTED THE “NO DONG” MISSILE IN MAY 93, STIMULATING NEW INTEREST IN JAPAN IN THEATER BALLISTIC MISSILE DEFENSE.
THE SCUD FLIGHT TIME TO OSAN FROM ITS HOME BASE IS APPROX 3 MIN, BUT IF THEY ARE DEPLOYED NEAR THE DMZ, THE FLIGHT TIME DECREASES TO JUST OVER A MINUTE!
