Henry H. Brown (1825-1918) and Elizabeth Leeper (1826-1868)

Henry Brown was born on July 4, 1825 in Miami County, Ohio. He was a son of Robert Brown and Hannah Penny (both born in South Carolina). The Browns moved to Darke County and Henry married Elizabeth Leeper there on December 21, 1845. Elizabeth had been born on November 21, 1826 in Ohio and was a daughter of William Leeper and Sarah Taylor.

After the marriage, Henry and Elizabeth farmed land in Patterson and Wayne Townships of Darke County. They had at least seven children and probably more.

On February 20, 1865, when the Civil War was almost over, Henry enlisted for service in the Union army. He apparently did not see much combat, but still returned home in poor health. A regimental surgeon had ordered Henry to take medicine to help cure his sore neck, but instead gave him something that made him seriously ill. Henry's life was in danger for the next three weeks and he was never completely well after that time. Eventually he qualified for a military pension due to his disability.

Soon after the war, Henry moved his family to Paulding County, Ohio. Elizabeth died there on February 29, 1868. In subsequent years, Henry married three more times and had children by two of the wives.

In his later years, Henry gave up farming and moved into the town of Grover Hill, where he lived with his fourth wife until his death on January 2, 1918, at the age of 92.
