29-aug-2000- There are a number of new discoveries in the GEDCOM file that have not
yet been incorporated in the website, specifically on the lineage of Isak Olsen
29-Sep-2000 - I received an email from the genealogist at the Valdres Sambrand which added a few ancestors to
the Ole Engebretson Holdaleie and Ragnild Ellingsdatter records as well as Halvor
Halvorson Holdal and Kari Nilsdatter, each from the Skrutvål parish in Valdres.
Thanks Betty. I also cleaned up a lot of errors (people baptized
at
the church cemetery and such) and found some redundant entries that were
merged.
27-Oct-2000 - I received an email from Richard Petersen with his research that
coincides with mine in the Sigbjorn Sigbjornsen Tesager (aka Tesak, Tesok). This is being
evaluated and updated for the future.
01-Nov-2000 - It's appropriate to add a number of ancestors to the GEDCOM file for all
saints day. ;-) I found some research that my mother and aunt did which I did not record
previously. It is now included. The corresponding web pages will be updated later.
08-Dec-2000 - I've been diving into the copy of "Bydgebok for Gyland" by my
great uncle Lars Fr. Nuland and finding a number of loose ends and confirmations of other
research. The individual list is up to 1254 people, but the website is not updated for
that, I have only updated the GEDCOM and the pedigree PDF file above. I also am
updating the notes page to describe this activity.
15-May-2001 - I received a note from Jan Northey, who appears to be a
third cousin related through Christian Isaksen, Marie Isaksen's brother. She
notes some incorrect linkages in my research in the Isak Olsen area. This has
been corrected. [Thanks Jan]. She is at jnorthey@globaldialog.com
25-May-2001 - Richard Petersen has been researching the "Bydgebok for Gyland"
and has put together a listing of all the people living on all the farms in
Gyland, Vest Agder, Norway. In his note he warns that the data is unchecked. I
am checking it as he does. I added his work in progress here, if
someone is interested. It is a good reference. It is now stored in ZIP
format because of it's size.
01-Jul-2001 - Added the translation for the Gyland Gard to the selected
translations.
13-Mar-2002 - It's been awhile since I have updated the site. It must be
getting a lot of hits recently, Yahoo has notified me that they are turning it
off occasionally because it gets too much activity. I am up to 1701 people in
the GEDCOM file from Marlene Larson and Ellen Kleister's work on the
Larsen/Larson family and Dick Petersen's research that he has been sharing
with me. He has the whole Bygdebok for Gyland catalogued and placed in a
GEDCOM file as noted above. I would be tempted to put it online here but it is too
big, so I had to ZIP it. One of these days I'll rebuild the web site to be
consistent wit the GEDCOM. Dick has also been sharing the Skifter
15-Mar-2002 - WOW! A VERY nice lady from Flekkefjord, NO just sent me an
Ahnentafel for my mom, it goes back 30 generations to the year 900. There is a
number of Kings and Queens (not those kind of queens!) from Denmark, Sweden,
Ireland, France, Spain, and Kiev (Russia). Those Vikings really got around.
And I thought all these years that I was Norwegian. Dick Petersen got his just
before me and I guess we are in a race to see who can transcribe and check it
first. ;-) . I think he'll win, I am only on page 25 of 123...stuck in the
ancestors from the 1600s. This will take some checking of course (if checks
out well so far). I added the new info into the GEDCOM file tho. It is over
1800 people now. The source of this information is the "Flekkefjord
Historielag" which costs 50 kr/ year to join.
29-Jul-2002 - I have done a major rebuild of this web site, adding the new
generations that I can justify. I don't have conclusive evidence of a
relationship to King Harald Fairhair, so I have not included it yet. Stay
tuned...
22-Aug-2002 - OK... I have sifted through Signe's Ahnentafel for my mother
and verified the sources I could. I am fairly certain at this point that that
the research of her group is correct, which would make the Gyland's and
Nuland's in my family descendants of Konge Harald Hårfåre or King Harald
Fairhair or Norway . The GEDCOM has been updated to reflect this, the web site
is still out of date. I am updating the notes to reflect the work and research
of the new data.
05-Sep-2002 - Finally Updated the whole web site with the information I
currently have, all the way back to King Harold Fairhair in the 9th
century. Still checking links for errors, the new upload feature that Yahoo
uses is a pain compared to the Frontpage upload they allowed years ago.
21-Dec-2002 - I received an interesting letter from Jerry Longstrom in
Arizona. He is an 11th cousin or so with ancestors from Kvanvig, near
Flekkefjord, Norway. see http://www.angelfire.com/art/jlong/
for his genealogy notes.
23-Dec-2002 - A day off before Christmas, I found a interesting link that
ties the genealogy of this site to Charlemagne. See http://www.kareldegrote.nl/charlemagne/frame-Charlemagne.htm.
I deduce from this web site that I am the 36th great grandson of Charlemagne.
Since George Washington is his 29th great grandson, I am somewhat related to
him too.
05-Jan-2003 - I have been playing with the Dynamic Family
Tree Compiler (see above). http://www.dftcom2.co.uk/
has details of this, interesting program.
08-Apr-2003 - Ellen Coulombe sent me a note about an obvious
mistake in the Berte Sigbjørnsatter Eikeland birth place. It has been
repaired (Thanks) . See her interesting website with many parallels to my own
ancestry at http://www.gencircles.com/users/keyqueen/2
21-Nov-2003 - Time really flies... I
have had little time to do much more than respond to emails from known
relatives and new-found relatives (who have written after discovering this web
site). I would like to update this whole site one day; freshen it up. This
entry to the journal notes a few links that have been sent to me.
Specifically, a link to Norwegian maps
including a farm search. Also linking one of my favorite hobbies...http://www.torskeklub.org
23-Mar-2003 - Spent a little time
correcting errors in the GEDCOM and using that to update the "Dynamic Family
Tree". The rest of the website is out of date, I'll get to that sometime. I
added some viking kings to the Kiev relations; check the detail on the princes
of Kiev (Vladimir I, etc.)
23-Dec-2005, 07-Jul-2006 - Sorry folks, the site is getting a little stale and I have much info to correct and insert. Work has been occupying all my free time and in spite of the fact that I have many nights in a hotel room to work on this, computer architecture has been occupying my free cycles. I did give a talk at the Chicago Torske Klub, but that is all for now.
04-Sep-2007 - My wife and I visited Gyland (and Nuland and Nedland farm) in Norway last year and again this year. We also visited Valdres, the Viste farm and the areas around Fagernes, Lomen and Vest Slidre. Wonderful places! I'll try to get photos online some day.
20-Nov-2007 - I update the web pages with the latest PAF 5.0 program. Good news is that it omitted the references to the living. Bad news is that it seemed to randomly assume that many dead people are living. So some records are now omitted. Another fix in the future.
