This Sunday the readings stress our call to repentance and forgiveness when we have sinned.  We see that God's forgiveness is all inclusive as Jesus gives the task to His apostles and to us, His modern apostles, to spread the Good News of God's forgiveness to "people of all nations."  But first Jesus deals with the apostles' situation--they think he might be a ghost.  Jesus tunes into these feelings and anxieties (as He always tunes into ours).  He reassures them by showing them His wounds and invites them to eat fish and bread with Him.  He says by His actions--see, a ghost doesn't eat.  Recognize me!  He wants us to recognize all that He is in our lives and today He invites all of us to receive God's radical, generous forgiveness.

Sometimes, as humans, we find it hard to forgive so we see God's forgiveness as only a thimble-full whereas God's forgiveness is as vast and unfathomable as the ocean.

Why not, during this joyous season of God's boundless mercy and forgiveness in the Risen Jesus, avail ourselves of it by coming to receive it in the Sacrament of Reconciliation where we each receive God's forgiveness and peace in a very individual way?  Let's also try to imitate this life-giving forgiveness by forgiving others with a generous and loving heart.  Jesus' Risen Peace to you all!--Sr. Cathy Crowley, C.N.D.

HE IS RISEN – ALLELUIA

One of the most moving and powerful poems written by William Butler Yeats was his “Easter-1916.”  Yeats had reluctantly come to recognize the transforming effect on Ireland of its “Easter Rebellion.”  Launched on Easter Monday, 1916-the timing no coincidence- by a “motley” crew of unlikely leaders, Yeats had come to appreciate “the Rising” as  the rebirth of the Irish nation.  His refrain throughout the poem is “All changed, changed utterly.  A terrible beauty is born.” All Christians can say as much at every Easter time if we really believe, as the Orthodox say each Easter: “Christ is risen; He is risen indeed.”

Do we really believe it—this crowning event in the historical life of Jesus and God’s ultimate seal upon his as the Christ of our faith? For Easter is a lot to believe.  That Jesus lived, died and then was raised up by God on our behalf (Rom 4:25); that bonded with Christ by Baptism, we too, are raised up and can “live in newness of life” (Rom 6:4).  It’s a lot to believe that “the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also” (2 Cor 4:14), that his resurrection has given us “the victory” over sin, that evil cannot finally triumph—why even death has “lost its sting” (1 Cor 15: 55-57).  We know for sure that we will die, but can we also trust that “in Christ, shall all be brought to life” again? (1 Cor 15:22).
