Jordan Lake State Recreational Area
North Carolina
Jordan Lake
Jordan Lake is one of two Army Corps of Engineer Lakes in the
Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina. The other is Falls
Lake. The picture above was taken near the dam. In fact, you can see
where I stood to take it in the picture below. I was above the shore near
the building in the upper left of the photo below facing north (upwards
and a little towards the right).
Jordan Dam

For such a large lake, the dam is surprisingly small (113'
high x 1330' long). Here is it, on the Haw River, south of Raleigh. This
is obviously an opportune damsite because the hills come together at this
point near the river. Upriver, they widen so the water can spread out and
create a large lake in the piedmont. Downriver the hills give way to the
coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. (The picture above looks like
something from the middle of winter)
The beach at Poplar Point Recreational Area
The water is not very inviting in March, but there are a few
that can stand it. It's great in Summer, though, when the weather is hot
and humid, and the water is cool and refreshing.
Our Cook
All campsites come with a lamppost, a metal fire-ring/grill
set, a table, and a flat gravel area outlined with timbers, and are surrounded
by scenic woods and wildlife. About 1/4 of the sites are directly on the
water.
Our Driver
What's he doing up there? That's just Ted showing off access
to rooftop storage through the poptop.
Jordan Lake is an Army Corps of Engineers project. The State
of North Carolina manages the recreational areas. For more information
on the recreational area, go to its webpage,
or get a map
(in adobe format), or see the North
Carolina State Park Info Page for something about all of North Carolina's
state parks. For more information on the project, go to its webpage.
