moved there from Cherokee Co., Ga, where he received land

The Patterson Family
I. John Patterson
  Tradition reports that John Patterson, a native of Scotland,
stowed away on a vessel bound for North Carolina with his 
friend Daniel Taylor. John Patterson settled in N.C. at the 
beginning of the Revolution and his friend, Daniel Taylor,
settled in Va.
   One of the children of John Patterson:
A. Archibald Patterson
  Archibald Patterson was born 5/4/1786. On 12/14/1809, he married
Mary Taylor, dau. of Daniel Taylor. Census record show that Archibald 
and Mary Taylor died in 1857, probably from some type of epidemic. 
They are buried in the Carrville Cemetery, Tallapoosa Co., Al. 
The children known to have been born to Archibald and Mary Taylor:
1.)Catherine Patterson, b. ca. 1810, N.C.
2.)Duncan Taylor Patterson, b. ca. 1812, N.C., died at home near 
  Tallassee, Al., 3/5/1862, from wounds received from the Battle at
  Fort Donelson. Married 1st. Margaret E. Hollingsworth in N.C.

Tradition reports that Duncan Taylor and his brother, John, were
large landholders on the Tallapoosa River in the Tallassee area.

5.) John Edward Patterson

  John Edward Patterson, b. 8/2/1821, at South River, N.C. Married
Martha Ann Cogdell on 3/20/1849 in N.C. They were charter members 
of the Methodist Church in Tallassee, Al., in 1855. John Edward, 
also served as a Justice of the Peace for many yrs and was known 
to the people living in the Tallassee area as "Squire Patterson".
The following children are known to have been born to John Edward 
and Margaret A. Cogdell:

The Pemberton Family
I. Joshua Pemberton

Joshua Pemberton was b. ca. 1780  and d. ca. 1836. He married 
  his first wife, Jane Griffin, ca. 1805 in Greene Co., Ga. In 1824,
  he married his second wife, Elizabeth Griffin, at Jasper Co., Ga.
Joshua Pemberton drew land in Wilkerson Co., Ga., in 1807, and bought 
  land in Jasper Co., Ga. in 1811. By 1819, he was living in Monroe Co.,
  Ga., and in 1830, Troop Co., Ga. Sometime after 1830 he migrated to 
  Chambers Co., Al.

To James Douglas and Amanda Gatlin , or Gatland Douglas were born four
children as follows: 1.) James Douglas, Jr. , m. Lou Stewart, dau.

                     3.) Emma Jane Douglas, b. 7/15/1859, married James
Patterson.           4.) Alice Douglas, b. near Eden, Al.: m. Wiley

(I will only refer to Emma and Alice's marriages).

  Emma Jane Douglas, b. 1859, m. James A. Patterson on 7/15/1874. He was 
the son of Elias Earl Patterson and Mary Elizabeth Ball Patterson. 
James was b. 5/23/1855. This couple were born and lived most of their 
lives in St. Clair Co., Al. They moved to Texas, but lived Al. better.
To this couple thirteen children were born:

    Wiley Patterson and James A. Patterson, were the sons of Elias 
  Earl Patterson and Mary Elizabeth Ball Patterson. Elias was 
  a very prosperous farmer and owned a large farm, some of which
  is where Eden, Al. now is located. Elias gave right of way to the 
  Ga. Pacific Railroad(It's now called the Southern Railroad) through
  his land. He gave to the railroad the site where the depot
  was built. And also gave the lot of land for the Methodist Church,
  and a lot for a Presbyterian Church, which was never built, due to
  not enough Presbyterians in this section to support a church.

The Patterson Family of Eagle Creek Community, Tallapoosa Co., Al.

William Hensley Patterson 
  According to the intestate probate records, Wm. Hensley Patterson
died ca. 1866 and his wife Martha E. died 1867. It is said that he is 
the probable father, or possibly a brother to Marina "Arena" Patterson
who married Peter E. Harris, and William Clark Patterson who married 
Mary Ann Burdett. Reason being W.C. Patterson is mentioned in the 
Probate Records of William Hensley.

I. William Clark Patterson
   It is assumed he was born in 1828. He is buried at Eagle Creek Baptist
Cemetery in Dadeville, Al. on 7/30/1852, he married Mary Ann Burnett, the 
dau. of Eli U. and Lucy Burnett. The Civil War Appl. filed by Mary Ann
on 6/8/1905, states that Wm. Clark died on 6/12/1904. He was a private
in Company G, 34th Regiment and that he was wounded, or diseased during
the Civil War. He had a difficult time after the war because of poor 
health. According to an application filed on 3/27/1894, Wm.C. Patterson
had part of his foot cut off during the war, and that he was nearly blind 
and could scarcely see his way. In 1896, he owned 120 acres of land in 
Sessions which is near the Eagle Creek Community in Tallapoosa, Al.
   William Clark Patterson and Mary Ann Burnett raised a large family.

The following was found in the "1800 Census of Pendleton
District, South Carolina,"

   Alexander Patterson was in Abbeville District before 1790. 
John Patterson bought 8/14/1790 of Joseph Woodall land on 
Twelve-Mile Creek granted to Woodall 6/5/1786, and John 
Patterson, Jr. bought land nearby on Golden's Creek of Twelve-
Mile Creek 11/16/1790 of Wm. Hallum, who obtained the tract in
a grant of 6/5/1785. The 1808 Elbert Co., Ga., will of John 
Patterson named wife Margaret, sons William B., James, Robert,
Samuel, John, Thomas, Joseph, George, Alexander, and dau. 
Elizabeth Pickens. In 1836 and 1837, George W., John and William
B. Patterson entered land in Walker Co., Al., and Samuel D.
was living there in 1840.

Joseph was in the 1805 Jackson lottery. James (#107) and William (#362) also were enumerated in Jackson Co., and there were many others over the state. A William living in Hall Co., in 1827, and Jesse and John were in DeKalb Co., in 1830. Robert Pateson, 78, was enumerated in Gwinnett Co., in 1840, as a Revolutionary Soldier. Rachel Patterson was married to Patton Gardner of Jackson Co.
The following was taken from the book, "Memorial 
Record of Alabama, Vol. II, Chapter-Personal Memoirs,
Russell Co."

 M.L. Patterson, planter, of Oswichee, Al., is a son of
Edward and Mildred(Lewis) Patterson. William Patterson
was the father of Edward Patterson, a Virginian, and a
Revolutinary War soldier. He married Elizabeth Morris, 
and raised a family of eleven children. Late in life,
in 1801, he moved to South Carolina,settling in 
Spartanburg District, S. Carolina. M. L. Patterson's 
father was the youngest of the eleven children, and 
was born in 1791. He was reared in South Carolina,
and married in North Carolina. He and his wife passed 
their married life in the Spartanburg District. He was
a planter by occupation and was a nullifier, serving 
as colonel of a regiment raised to resist the Federal
Government in collection of the Revenue. He died in 
1841, and his wife died in 1855. The Lewis family were
from North Carolina, were M. L.'s mother was born and 
raised. Her father was a Virginian, and of Welsh 
descent. The family was connected with many of the best
people in the state. Mr. Patterson's father and mother 
were married, about 1816, in Spartanburg District, and
raised thirteen children, ten of which are living at 
the time of this book:

  M.L. Patterson was born 9/28,1820, in Spartanburg
District, S.C. He was raised there, and received a 
good education. He studied law in the office of Henry 
& Bobo, Spartanburg, at the age of twenty-four came to
Columbus, Ga. where he was admitted to the bar. He
followed the profession of the law in Columbus for
about twenty years. During the war he served some time
in the Confederate Militia, being called at the time
Atlanta was captured. After the war he removed to Al.,
and settled on a plantation, and lived there. He was 
married in Harris Co., Ga., in 1851, to Augusta P.
Benning. The Bennings were a well prominent family in
Ga. Henry L. Benning, brother of Mrs. M.L. Patterson, 
having been one of the judges of the supreme court of 
that state. Mrs. Patterson was also a sister to Richard
A. and Caroline Benning. Caroline married to Benjamin
Y. Mastin. They were the children of Pleasant M. and 
Melinda L. Benning. To the marriage of M.L. and Augusta
Patterson were born five children:
a.) Pleasant, at home.
b.) Edward N., druggest in Columbus, Ga.
c.) Mildred L., at home
d.) Jerome A., at home.
e.) M.L., Jr., at home. 
   Mr. Patterson was one of the wealthiest planter's 
in the state and his family was well connected. 
He was a republican in politics. He and his entire
family are members of the Catholic Church. He lived 
in a fine plantation home and was highly respected by 
all.
