Bharatha Natyam is a form of art which uses the body as the medium of communication with graceful movements and facial expressions. It is a classical dance of South India, especially in Tamilnadu. NATYASASTHRA is the root of all classical dance. In Bharatha Natyam the expressions may be most intricate and developed, but can be easily understood. It contains Abhinayas, Mudhras, Nrithya & Nritta.
In this dance there are nine basical emotions called RASAS namely,
A best dancer can be identified by the way she presents the complicated expressions with the ease.
In Bharatha Natyam there are so many dance items, but a dance concert usually contains the following items and also in the following order.
ALARIPPU-Opening dance.
PUSHPANJALI-This Dance dedicated to Lord Nataraja.
JATHISWARAM (or) SWARAJATHI-Jathi:Rythmic Patterns; Swaram: Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni. This item is full of jathis and has no words.
SHABDHAM
VARNAM-This is the main dance of the program. It is a combination of Rasas, Abhinayas, Jathis(rythms), Swaras(syllables), with words, Theermanam & Thattimettu.
PADHAM-Melodious love songs(Dramas) with graceful movements & expressions.
KEERTHANAM
THILLANA-This is the final item of the program, which is composed with few words and full of rythms like:
My Experience With Bharatha Natyam:
I started learning Bharatha Natyam when I was 10 years old. My first "Guru" was Mrs.Uma Lakshmi, who paved the path to my successful journey. She was my teacher for four years & I continued my practice with Thiruvidai Marudhur. Raja Lakshmi Ammal (who was a well known artist in Tanjore district, Tamil Nadu, India ) as my teacher for another four years. After her, Mrs.Parvathy Mohan became my "Guru", who was not only my teacher but also my friend & guide who lead me to my Arangetram on Febrary 18th, 1995 at Music Academy, Madras, India. I learned Veena & Carnatic Music from Thiru. Veenai Jaya Raman (Kudandhai).
