Author of Hollywood Silents
Most
of the people and many of the buildings of Hollywood's silent era disappeared.
There is not much nostalgia in real estate, and we all know that
aging is limited.
My first memory of watching
a Silent Movie was Chaplin on television being threatened by the giants
Mack Swain and Eric Campbell, accompanied by sounds of slide whistles and
woodblocks.
Silent comedy is often
violent. The best roundhouse punch was delivered by little Mabel
Normand. Some people claim she invented the pie in the face along
with her friend Roscoe Arbuckle. Curiously, they both were murder suspects.
Silent actors and actresses
were very expressive visually. The best were masters of body language,
the art of pantomime, and "learn to read eyes."
So much of
the old films have been lost. What remains is often fragmented, scratched,
blurred and otherwise worn. But there is much to admire in
the work of many people of the Silent Era. It was part of our
ancestors' lives. This webpage is a nod, a wink, and a tip of the
derby hat to people out of the past.
That is Betty Bronson in the Background - great eyes.
