Bride of Chucky

When reviewing this film I have two options: review it as a straight horror film or review it as the camp wannabe it is. So in fairness, I'll cover it from both points of view. It's basically the story of Chucky and his girlfriend (from his human days), who resurrects him and is killed for her efforts. Chucky puts her soul into a doll and the two begin a killing spree as they hitch a ride cross-country with a pair of unsuspecting teens who end up taking the blame for the dolls' misdeeds. As a straight horror film, Bride is sorely lacking. Though there is some minor suspense and the film has a nice visual look thanks to director Ronny Yu, the premise and execution are both silly and take away any edge the graphic and sometimes imaginative kills might have. As pure entertainment, however, the movie isn't half bad. It's ludicrous, sure, but the jokes are plentiful and the laughs seem to outnumber the groaners. There are several inside jokes and moments of self parody. These additions are not only refreshing but are also necessary considering the fact that a film entitled Bride of Chucky shouldn't take itself too seriously. Make no mistakes: this is no horror classic. But as a horror comedy taken at face value it is a fun excersion. Regular Score: C- Entertainment Score: C+ | |
