Deep Rising isn't a classic, but it packs enough thrills for a good time. The story is typical creature-on-the-loose fare, and the characters are underdeveloped. But who sees a monster movie for the characters anyway. You see a film like this for the monster, and the monster is done surprisingly well. The CGI works here (unlike in some other recent films) and the creature is exciting and menacing to watch. This film packs some suspense, but the focus is on action, action, and more action. If you like subtle terrors or are expecting the scare of your life, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a gory action romp, Deep Rising is your ticket.
