I Still Know What You Last Summer

Columbia

I Still Know... begins promisingly enough. Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is at college, still haunted by the events of the previous summer. The incident has left her a paranoid mess - triple-locking her doors, jumping at every little noise. The film begins on a great note, furthering the sense of guilt and fear that began in the first film.

Until, however, Julie's roomate Carla (Brandy) wins a trip for four to a Caribbean island. Once they arrive at the tropical destination the film completely falls apart. It seems like screenwriter Trey Callaway started the script and simply gave up one-third of the way through. The film ends up feeling more like one of the lesser entries in the Friday the 13th series than the original film. Bodies pop out of closets, pointless characters are introduced just to add to the body count, and most of the kills are suspenseless and gory, designed for quick shock value more than for actually scaring the audience. Not only are the kills lame, but the film is packed with way too many red herring and cheap fake scares. The Caribbean setting is also a mistake, as it lends nothing to this type of film and seems even more ludicrous once you discover the reasons behind it. There are some good moments, mostly in the climax, but they are few and far between. With movies like this one and last month's Urban Legend, Sony Pictures seems to be trying to single-handedly kill the slasher genre once and for all.
