Wishmaster
LIVE | |
Wishmaster is about a being called the Djinn, an evil genie who is released from a special stone in modern-day America. He must grant the one who released him (a pretty gemologist played by Tammy Lauren) three wishes, after whick he will be able to take over Earth with his fellow Djinn. Along the way, he grants wishes to others, later taking their souls as payment. His wishes also have another catch: they always backfire horribly on the wisher. Wishmaster is a decent film. The story greatly resembles the Hellraiser films in some aspects, especially part three (no surprise considering that Wishmaster's screenwriter Peter Atkins also wrote Hellraisers 2-4. The performances are okay. Lauren has a tendency to overact at times, but is overall fairly good. The rest of the cast, including genre stars Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, and Reggie Bannister and featuring Andrew Divoff as the title creature, is great. The film is reminiscent of a lot of eighties horror, not only Hellraiser but the Nightmare films and others. Nothing truly terrifying, but the type of good rollercoaster ride film that hasn't been seen in years. C+ | |
