Friday, October 10, 1998 - Good Feelings

Got my postcard back acknowledging the Black Hollywood Film Festival got my entry. Now it's time to forget about it. Printed out the Slamdance application today and will fill it out this weekend and send it in this Monday. I can then forget that too.

Saw the new Lolita this weekend. The film did some things very right. I don't think Jeremy Irons was very good for that part. And indeed Melanie Griffith was dreadful as the mom. There was no excuse for that match. Fortunately she dies early in the film. Mixed feelings about Quilty. He came across as sufficiently sleazy, but the director took quite a bit of license with that role. Not that the film had to be faithful to the book, but the director was very literal in some cases so he just begs the comparison. The Swain girl was a natural and I think this makes it worth seeing. Great screen presence and great directing in this aspect. Aside from that I think you'd be better off reading the book or watching the Kubrick version. This new version has none of the humor of either.
