(Scene opens to three service station attendants sitting around talking inside the glassed-in office of an old-style, full-service gas station. MEL is identified by his sew-on name tag.)
Mel: ...told him "you can't drop a big block into that little Z! Now maybe a small block. That's been done. But even then you've got to worry about overheating, and it may not exactly be street legal her in California." So I tell him, "No way! Can't be done! It would be all engine..." He he pulls out these Polaroids and, well, you know, I though I'd seen everything, but...
(There is a ringing in the background. Bruce's car has pulled up. This causes Mel to shift his gaze while talking. When he does this his speech trails off. He quickly changes the subject.)
Mel: (Looking through the window. One of the other attendants whistles.) Now will you get a load of that...
(Bruce and Mary pull up to the gas pump. Mary is closest to the camera.)
(Close up of car as it stops. Bruce turns off engine.)
Mary: I want to pump it.
Bruce: Okay. Fill her up.
Mel: (Still in office. Another attendant starts to jump up, wiping his hands on rag. Mel holds out arm to keep him in his seat.) I'll take care of this one.
(Bruce is filling out the mileage log he has gotten out of the glove compartment.)
(Mel has walked up to the car, but is still off camera. His shadow covers Bruce. Mel addresses Bruce, who is still looking down into his log book.)
Mel: You got yourself a right nice little cherry there.
(Bruce looks up, a little irritated.)
Mel: (Looking Bruce's car up and down.) Yes, sir! 1968 Gran Turismo Omologato. Gee-Tee-Oh! Son Buck! Check out the options:
(As Mel rattles the list of option the camera shows close ups of each particular feature. These shots were obviously filmed at another time and place.)
Mel: I bet when you jump on this baby she really screams. You mind if I pop the hood?
Bruce: Have a go... (Bruce starts to get out of the car.)
(Mary by gas tank, pumping gas. Looks over to gas pump.)
(Subjective shot of gas pump)
(Mary, still looking over at gas pump)
(Young boy, roughly age 7, standing behind car, looking at Mary, curious.)
(Mary looks over at boy (camera) and smiles.)
(Boy blushes in a squirmy, young boy manner.)
(Mary looks back at pump, looks at tank. Gas flow stops. Mary pulls out nozzle, replaces nozzle onto pump, starts to put gas cap on.)
(Bruce and Mel, closing the car hood.)
Mel: Nice detail, Fella. (Mel wipes hands on rag he has been carrying.) Well, here's my card. If you ever think of changing your mind, give a ring.
Bruce: You'll be the first to know. But she is my baby. (They shake hands. We hear car door slam.)
(We see Mary sitting in passenger's seat, putting on sunglasses, primping in the mirror.)
(Bruce comes around to driver's side, opens door.)
(Mary looks up, smiles, as Bruce get in car.)
(We see Mel walking up to the other attendants, in same position as at beginning of scene. We hear Bruce's car engine starting.)
Mel: (Smiling, making gliding hand gestures) "Get Turned On..."
(Bruce's car drives off.)
(All three attendants are standing now, looking out of window at Bruce's car as it drives off.)
Other Attendant: Cute girl.
Mel: (Looks at other attendant) What girl?
