Tanya at Avalon in Boston, MA October 10, 1997

Ata reports:

I can only speak for myself -- I'm sort of played. It was great fun and well worth it, even though I'm getting over a cold. We had some beers after the show (which was very good, the band was tighter than when I saw them in New York) and repaired to Doug's where we chatted a bit and most everybody went home except for me, I crashed where I was sitting. Thanks for the hospitality Doug!

It was fun but I think a few of us drove fairly far to get there so it put a bit of a damper on the after party but I want to do it again -- for Juliana Hatfield!

Laura reports:

Hello!

Yesterday was a blast and I was so happy to see everyone from the list get together like we did! Seeing 15 people get along so well over dinner after the show was a very cool thing. And I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Doug and Ata for supplying the after-party goodies and place to hang out afterwards!

A few of us from the list attended Tanya's soundcheck and that was a good time as well. She spent a lot of time talking with everyone and signing promo posters and stuff. Plus we got to hear 4 extra songs too :)

Here is the set list for the show, in order-

The Bees (acoustic)
Acrobat
Lantern
Breathe Around You
Low Red Moon
The Bright Light
Pretty Deep
Manna
Swoon
Dusted
Human
Landspeed Song
Clipped
Time of the Season

Encore:

Feed the Tree (acoustic)
Mysteries of the Unexplained

I had never heard Tanya sing The Bees before, so that was a great surprise for me. I also loved hearing Manna, which took everyone's breath away. Especially after she gazed (very) longingly into Dean's eyes before singing. And the crowd favorite was definitely Pretty Deep, which had an amazing amount of people singing the words out loud. It was great to see that the crowd actually knew her material, both old and new.

I had a great time with everyone there, and hope we can all do it again someday!

Laura then asks:

>to whom was time of the season dedicated to at the avalon show?

it wasn't dedicated to anyone actually. but some other song...i think it was landspeed song (help me out, guys!) was dedictated to one of tanya's aunts.

- laura

Sarah replies and asks:

yes, i know the other... it was aunt phyllis...

however, i recall time of the season to have been for someone, if they were there... didn't catch though for whom

Derek responds:

Time of the Season was dedicated to the opening band--Syrup USA--who I thought was pretty good, though alot of their songs sounded the same. I spoke to the drummer after the show and he was really cool (he's a huge tanya fan). Their first album will be out next Tuesday, for anyone who cares.

Buck adds:

the show was outstanding! man, she's so powerfull with that guitar. i do miss gail though, but dean was pretty cool on bass. i thought they were tight also although they only played for about 45 min.first time i have seen her on stage without her guitar (acrobat) and she held her own on stage. acoustic feed the tree was a treat for encore. score: * * * * *

Doug adds:

All I can say from the Boston show is that Tanya was in rare form that night... having seen her in the Muses, Belly, and on her own, I can safely say that last friday's show was my favorite... personal highlight was Manna, which I never really enjoyed until that night... I'm jealous of all the rest of you!!! Anyone want to road trip to amsterdam???

Only half-kidding...

-Doug

Patrick also adds:

Well, I'd never seen Tanya live before the Avalon show, but I also thought it was great. And the coolest thing about seeing her play for the first time, was that I got in for free! But I didn't understand how people describe her as awkward or shy on stage, cause she seemed completely comfortable and cool.
