Tanya at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC October 14, 1997
Dennis reports first about the in-store: the in-store performance in raleigh (excuse me, chapel hill) was nice. Tanya played only two songs, acoustic versions of "restless" and "swoon" with Rich the other guitarist, but they were excellent versions. (I donno, maybe it was because i was standing two feet away with maybe, 15 other people. In fact, it was so close that i felt uncomfortable watching them play so i looked at other people (no, Sung, i didn't get her phone number :( ) and the posters along the walls)) i've never seen so much tanya stuff in one place before. they must have had 20-30 posters on the wall and 100 cds on display. i neglected to pick up a few of the *free* posters (they're taken with a tan filter and have tanya's face on them if i remember, nice, maybe a foot square in size) so i asked my friend to grab a stack of them for me, i need to call her and see if she got them, anyone want one? i'll see what i can do. strangely, they were amplified for such a small gathering. they ran everything into one little mixing box and out to a gray monitor speaker which we were surprised to see at the show later behind elizabeth. pinsky was the "sound man" for the in-store show i guess. by the way, pinsky said he was the tour manager, i wonder what the difference between him and gary is? while we were waiting for tanya to come on, we noticed she was standing outside on the sidewalk drinking something (iced coffee? smoothie?) from one of the shops on the street, she looked like a college student :>
anyway, if she plays more than two songs at upcoming in-stores, i'll be very jealous :b
sorry for the rambling on, it's late and it's my nature.

you mean carrboro/chapel hill, NC. i went, it was a rockin' show... cat's cradle was not even close to full (50-100 people). rained like cats and underdogs. bought a nice t-shirt, white with the logo on the front and blurry tanya on the back with green trim.
went to the monster/schoolkid's records in chapel hill to see the free acoustic "show" and meet tanya. she was there with rich (who was dressed in orange) and played acoustic guitar and rich played mandolin and lap steel. unfortunately, they played only two songs (swoon and restless) and then told us they had to "bolt" to soundcheck. they did wait to sign a few autographs and chat (at this point i get my sliding and diving ep that my friends thomas and lisa brought me from london, and i take thomas and tanya's picture). then i swoon over this unbelievably cute female college student who was in attendance.
drove the twenty minutes back to raleigh and played chrono trigger on the super nintendo for an hour and a half. then picked up thomas and lisa and went back to UNC to see the show. got lost trying to pick up jennifer (damn those city planners, didn't put street signs on half the important streets). got back just in time for the rain and the last few songs of glory fountain's opening set (the same unbelievably cute girl from the record store was there too (swoon)). bought t-shirts at this time, lisa and christy met pinsky the tour manager from minnesota. pinsky hooks them up with posters and they chase him around until tanya comes on. unfortunately, rich's guitar wasn't tuned too well. they open with the bees. played the bright light (elizabeth played accordian! it was neat) played a great low red moon, dusted, human (yay!), swoon and restless again, most (except goat girl) from lovesongs, last song is time of the season. the encore was mysteries of the unexplained and spaghetti (a great song). show's over. they mop up the drool from the front row of guys who never blinked during the entire set. generous couple in front of us gives up a set list to lisa and christy (they get a lot of stuff). they chase pinsky around for a bit, order him to bring tanya out, etc etc. we hang around in front of the cradle, tanya comes out, talks to fans, signs autographs (one guy brought the boy's underwear spread from that spin issue, tactful, no?), chat some more, sonny gets her to sign a dollar bill (she signs everything with that circle cross T, D thingy) and we get a nice group photograph with tanya. and pinsky gets a photo with lisa and christy. we leave.
the tanya donelly band dress well. rich in early 70s garb, looks like elton john's cooler sibling, most active during the set, tanya and elizabeth wore brownish colors and dean looked like a normal guy. i couldn't tell what drummer boy was in.
the set was at the perfect volume level. it was quiet enough that you could hear the fans blowing in the quiet parts.
lalala.
