In brief:

Tanya Donelly and company played a rocking series of sets in Vermont as a part of Rock in Rockingham, the brain child of Tanya's producer Gary Smith. On the last day of the three day music festival, she introduced some new songs to be included in the just finished new album to be released in the Spring of 2004. Accompanying her on the new album will be Dean Fisher (on a multitude of instruments) and Elizabeth Steen (keyboards and vocals).

Tanya also has a children's record project with Chris Toppin. The CD is expected to be released sometime in 2004 as well. The CD features 16 musicians, including Kay Hanley, Robin Vaughn, Blake Hazard and Warren Zanes!

In 2002, Tanya released "Beautysleep", her second solo album. It was a long five year wait, but worth it! Tanya followed up the album with a tour, covering Europe and the US.

Tanya gave birth to Grace Bee Fisher at 5:44 PM on April 13, 1999 in Cambridge, MA! She and Dean devoted the next few years into raising "Gracie" (as nicknamed by her parents), whose confidence and poise are a reflection of their nurture.

She completed touring Australia and New Zealand in March of '98, which completed the "Lovesongs for Underdogs" tour. Tanya's first solo album "Lovesongs for Underdogs" ( first tentatively titled "Manna from Mars" (Thanks Jenna!) ) was released September 9, 1997 after being original scheduled for a June 17, 1997 release. 4AD (UK) and Reprise (US) are distributing it. A 7" [BAD 6018] and CD [BAD 6018 CD] "Sliding&DIVING" EP was released November 25, 1996 in the UK. It is available as an import in the US. Another single, "Pretty Deep" was released on August 18, 1997. "Pretty Deep" is available as two CD's [BAD 7007 and BAD D 7007] and a 7" [AD 7007] with different B-sides. The latest single, "The Bright Light" was released November 24, 1997. It's available as two CD's [BAD 7007 and BAD D 7012] and a 7" [AD 7012] with different B-sides.

Mark: Why did you break up the band, what happened there?... Without dwelling on it, but I've gotta ask.

    Tanya: Uuurrrmmmmm... we just all...

    Mark: Fell out.

Tanya: ...well ya'know, that's what happens to a certain extent, but that wasn't the primary reason... it was just that... er... people wanted to go off and do their own thing....and we'd kinda...I think things run their course at different times for different bands...and ours was particularly brief.

    (Tanya laughs a bit)

Mark: ...right... Are you happier now?

    Tanya: Yep!

Mark: Good... alright... you sound it...

Tanya: I mean we're all han... ya'know it's gross, but we all still hang out and talk to each other... so ya'know...

  • Brian exclaims: September 10, 1998

    Hello fellow listmembers,

    Here's one for Vinh's breaking-news page:

Yes, what was hinted at here in the mail list a couple of days ago is in fact the God's-honest-truth.

    TANYA IS GLOWING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, specifically her belly . . . (and GROWING).

She and Dean are expecting their first child due sometime in late March/early April.

WOO HOO!! CONGRATULATIONS to the happy couple!

    Brian

P.S. Do we think this will influence the new album in the same way Liz Phair's pregnancy did hers? (i.e. subject matter, and release days).

P.P.S. All this is posted here and related to you with Tanya's permission

  • Brian has this scoop: January 19, 1999

I had a chance to speak with Rich Gilbert briefly last night after the Frank Black and the Catholics show here in Tallahassee, and I thought I would pass along to you the three bits of info he imparted unto me:

    * Rich "just finished" recording with Tanya for her next album. He spoke of it in the past tense, as if there was no more (or not much more) to be done in the recording phase.

    * Rich seemed to think her album would be out in September of 1999, but he was admittedly unsure of that.

    * Rich is now a permanent Catholic. When I asked him if he would tour with Tanya again in support of her new album, he said "well, maybe, if I could juggle it." Of course Frank has a new album coming out soon, too -- so Rich may be touring with the Catholics for awhile.

  • Rocktropolis' Allstar's Miss Truth only has this quip:

Congratulations to Belly frontwoman- turned- solo artist Tanya Donelly and her husband and bassist Dean Fisher (formerly Juliana Hatfield's bassist), who are the proud new parents of a baby girl. Gracie Bee Fisher was born on April 13 in Cambridge, Mass., weighing in at 8 lbs. 10 oz., and measuring 21 inches. That's one way to shrink a belly...

  • Brian reports: June 22, 1999

    Hi folks,

I got an email from Tanya this weekend and she mentioned that 4AD is releasing some of what she recorded this past winter, but that Reprise wants more material . . . or at least a redo. They want a "real" producer to come in. She says she told them she'd work with Gil Norton. So they'll probably return to the studio this fall.

Doesn't sound good for the previously targeted Sept. release.

Baby and parents are doing fine, also.

  • Rich Gilbert confirms that Tanya and crew will be re-entering the studio for more work later this summer. Meanwhile, he is doing some insane guitar stuff, especially on "Los Angeles", with Frank Black and the Catholics as they tour across the US. Go catch Rich do some awesome riffs! :)June 28, 1999
  • The Boston Phoenix has this snippet: (Thanks Jeff!) January 30, 2000

The Bathing Beauties began as a for-fun outlet for Janovitz, Fuzzy's Chris Toppin, producer Paul Kolderie, and former-Juliana-Hatfield/ current-Tanya-Donelly bassist Dean Fisher. They originally intended just to perform cover tunes in a country vein. But the Beauties, who played a couple of weeks ago at the Abbey Lounge and will be playing again Thursday (February 3) at the Middle East at a benefit for Helium drummer Shawn Devlin, have started writing their own songs and recording demos, two signs that they've begun to take the band seriously.

  • Gary B overhears: November 22, 2000

Tanya's new album demo is in transit between Boston and London...

  • Jo of 4AD writes: (Thanks Paul!)December 17, 2000

"ok, I just shared a cab with Ed A&R from 4ad, and he said I could tell you all this - he has a number of songs from Tanya, totally wonderful, and he's - in fact they - are all dead excited about working with Tanya next year, expect some groovy 4ad action in the first quarter of next year now THAT is good news :)"
